No, these signs are for the Shaffield's furniture store across the street on the corner of E. Jackson and Jefferson. It is closing.

Ahh. I went back to Kroger this morning and saw no signs of RAC's demise. I did see that the space between RAC and the Old Bilmar Station had a City of Cookeville codes violation taped on its door; the violation was "NO PERMITS."

Those three spaces to the right viewing from Jefferson don't have enough ceiling height currently....I suppose I was being hopeful.

Yeah Shaffield's is closing its Cookeville store as well as its original store in Sparta. They're getting out of the furniture business completely. It's going to be fun to see what will replace its Cookeville location. It's prime property right there on the corner of Jefferson and Jackson with Aldi next door and Kroger across the street.

Interesting info in today's paper:

Retail Strategies has identified more than 50 retailers interested in coming to Cookeville including Food City, Rural King, Farmer's Furniture, Jim N Nicks, Denny's, Hwy 55 Burgers & Fries, Burke's Outlet and Dick's Sporting goods, according to information presented by [Cookeville Economic Development Coordinator Melinda] Keifer.

The article also mentions "Shoppes at Willow Avenue" which, upon a Google search, is the former public housing project on Willow at Jackson.

Council to consider contract to attract more retail | Herald Citizen

I could see Rural King where KMart used to be. I honestly can't see Dick's coming to Cookeville when there's already Dunham's and Academy Sports. But what do I know. Burke's Outlet would probably work at the old Sears (if HomeGoods doesn't get there first). Or at the mysterious "Shoppes at Willow Avenue."

Was the Shoppes at Willow Avenue the Shopping Center's Group proposal when bidding for the HRS land on Willow? If so, then this project went the way of the dodo as HRS chose to sell to Patel for the same amount with no proposed project.

By the way, Hwy 55 Burgers and Shakes is not very good, in my opinion.

I'd never even heard of it but had to look it up. I see they have frozen custard which, in my opinion, will more than make up for lackluster burgers. (I'd still rather have Culver's, though.)

We have 3 Hwy 55's around us. They're ok, try to be a 50's style diner. 1 of them has a classic car show in their lot every month that brings out some cool cars. We're getting a Freddys real close by soon. Almost up to Culver's quality.

Is there a place where one could find a list of major retail stores in Cookeville by category?

The only thing I can think of is the Chamber of Commerce web site which has a "shopping" category. It's not a complete list since it lists only retailers who are member of the chamber, and I can't find a category for grocery stores. And it includes locally-owned stores as well as some national chains.
