Ok so I went to Taste of the Town night,in the parking lot of the old Wilson Building. Talked to the lead developer David Allen, and this is definitely happening. Demolition will begin soon. He also told me that Chef Barry (of Bull & Thistle) will be Executive Chef and run the restaurant AND run the catering for the convention center. Gonna make it a destination spot!
Chef Barry had a booth last night and of course it was amazing.
I can't wait to see it!

So instead of opening his own brasserie in Cookeville, Chef Barry will be in charge of the hotel restaurant. That's a very nice consolation prize. It will definitely become a destination spot. The synergy this will create in downtown Cookeville is exciting to think about. There are already 20 or so eateries (I'm including the breweries and dessert places) in the west side of downtown Cookeville all within 2 or so blocks of each other.

It looks like the Shoppes on South Jefferson is nearly finished. Any word on which retailers will be occupying this space?

I haven't heard anything yet, but it does look like it's about to open. I took this picture yesterday morning.

While driving around town yesterday I took pictures of some of the commercial construction going on around town.

Colorobbia is building a 50,000 square foot lab in the Highlands Business Park for the ceramic tile industry. It's scheduled to open in January.

The old Raceway gas station on Willow was leveled, and the old gas tanks have been filled in. A full-service Holiday Inn is going here.

Cumberland Automotive's Overdrive USA which is supposed to open in September.

Candlewood Suites on South Jefferson next to the AMC theaters.

Looks like things are moving along with getting the land ready for the apartments that will be on East Broad St near Belle Acres Golf Course.

The expansion and renovation of the Cookeville Aldi is now complete, and it is very, very nice. Instead of having the feel and charm of a large convenience store, Aldi now has the feel of its fancier sister store, Trader Joe's, and more gourmet products than before. Its refrigerated section, in particular, is much larger and has probably twice as many cheeses and meats as it used to have. Its produce section is also larger.

Does anyone know who has purchased the office building near exit 290 on the right side of I-40 going eastbound? I think it used to be a medical supply company (maybe?). They have been clearing the landscaping out for a couple of weeks but I noticed yesterday that they had put up a sign on the outside. It is very small, though and hard to read.

Mayor Shelton was on the most recent podcast of Connecting Cookeville talking about developments and growth taking place in town. While the podcast turned out to be kind of a political ad for Mayor Shelton's re-election campaign, it was nonetheless interesting with some fun news. In addition to all the stores and restaurants that have already been announced recently, he said there are two more national restaurants which will be announced shortly as well as two different "family fun type centers" (such as Dave & Busters although not necessarily Dave & Busters). Other highlights:

In the last 3.5 years there have been 3,300 new jobs in Cookeville, the unemployment rate has dropped from 6.5 to 2.9 percent, there has been $120 million in residential and commercial construction in town, 4 miles of new sidewalks have been built, the new skate park will open this summer, a new water park should open in the next couple of years, and there's been $250 million in infrastructure and industrial construction in the Cookeville area.
