Those new to the area, those looking to build or remodel, or simply those who enjoy home shows should check out the Home Builders Association of the Upper Cumberland Home Show this weekend, March 4-6, at the Hyder-Burks Pavilion in Cookeville. In addition to 170 vendors and booths, there's a travel expo provided by the Upper Cumberland Tourism Association which will provide information on the many things to see and do in the 14-county Upper Cumberland region.

There will also be a cooking stage featuring 12 local chefs and celebrities such as Chad Combs of Seven Senses, winner of the 2015 World Chef Challenge, The Bull & Thistle's (and Ireland's) Barry O'connor, and Annabelle Nolan of Fox's MasterChef Junior.

And finally, there's a "barn sale" area with antiques, vintage home décor, and handmade shabby chic items for sale.

More information is found at its web site:

HBA of Upper Cumberland

You ever wonder why they charge potential customers to meet with sellers? It should be the other way around. Just think how many potential customers would show up if it was free.

They, as in the HBAUC, charge the sellers a LOT more than than they charge the customers to meet with each other.

The sellers should pay for the advertisement but not the customers.

The sellers pay the Homebuilders Association; the potential customers pay the Homebuilders Association. The Homebuilders Association pays for advertising....for leasing the space from the university and other associated costs. It's the Homebuilders Show...why should a vendor paying a registration of fee of at least a couple hundred dollars up to several hundred dollars pay for advertising?

What the potential customer is charged is very nominal. Not every person who walks through the door is a customer...and it's a show....shows charge admission. What's the cost of admission anyway....$2 or $3?

I'm not singling out this particular show. They all do it. Like the boat show in Nashville. The vendors pay to advertise their products and they hope to makes many sales from the customers who pay to attend. They tell the customers they can get special "boat show" prices to secure the deal but in reality you can get the same or better price if you just went to their showroom and haggled a price. It's a marketing tactic that imo the customer should not have to pay for.

I'm not sure that correlates to this particular show; I've been associated with a vendor's booth previously...and we didn't haggle or advertise special pricing....but perhaps some vendors do.

As far as advertising relates to this show, vendors do indirectly pay for advertising through their registration fee.

You know what BOAT stands for....Break Out Another Thousand. My dad was right, the two happiest days for a boat owner are the day you get it, and the day you get rid of it. Of course, that's not everyone's boat owning experience.

Yep ... that's what they say about boats but true boat people will always have a boat and use it ...

I'm not saying people should not go to the home show. The home show is a good way for people to get information on products and services from local providers. I just think that communities would be better served if potential customers attending didn't have to pay for attending given the purpose of the event.

Admission costs were $5 this year. It was very crowded Friday night. They did have parking lot attendants, I'm sure they were being paid.
