Publix will be in Cookeville...mostly a matter of time rather than where, but things change. I think Publix Cookeville v Crossville is mutually exclusive of the other, but Cookeville will have Publix prior to Crossville.

Putnam County Executive Randy Porter was on 94.1 this morning and said he's interested in seeing if the state would explore building a new state fairgrounds in Putnam County, with Putnam County sharing the cost.

While I don't think there's much chance of this happening, I'm glad he's thinking big.

This past Saturday over 1,000 cars had to be turned away because the fairgrounds ran out of space. I think the county commissioners who stupidly voted not to buy the land in Baxter for a larger fairgrounds should personally provide valet parking to those who couldn't get in.

Hindsight is 20/20, and it looks like the county commission was right not to go for the Baxter property for the new fairgrounds since that's where Brazilian company Portobello is going to spend $150 million to build its North American HQ and manufacturing facility.

Anyway, the county's fiscal review committee is recommending that the county purchase 105 or so acres (triple the size of the current fairgrounds) on the new Tennessee Avenue just a few hundred feet from I-40 for the new fairgrounds/expo center. The full commission will vote on it next week. I hope they say yes.

Considering that the Commission declined the option on the Baxter property a year or two ago, I wonder what changed now? I know that one or two of the commissioners would have voted different if there had been a signed contract on the current property. Makes me wonder if somebody has come back to Porter wanting to buy the current property.

But, like the article said, those two large pieces of property won't be there too long so maybe they just decided to go ahead and purchase. I know that they declined to purchase both now, but I think they'll end up purchasing the other piece too.

I think the reason the commission backed out of the Baxter property is because it wasn't in Cookeville. It would've been a good spot for the fairground otherwise, but I'm glad it's being used for a huge industrial development instead.

Last night the county commission approved buying a whopping 187 acres along the new Tennessee Avenue for the fairgrounds and expo center. There's enough land to be used for other county uses. There's been talk of building a new high school in the SW part of Cookeville, so maybe they have that in mind, too. Who knows.

I wonder if they would put a new high school out there as close as it is to Baxter vs south of I-40. I guess we will see in the next few years.
