I can't speak to any specific case, but sometimes when a patient needs a specific care or specialist that a hospital can't provide (or they don't have any more beds), they send them on to a facility that can provide that care. For example, a stroke patient may also have a heart condition (or vice versa) and one condition complicates the treatment of the other in a way that the closest hospital isn't necessarily prepared to handle... the patient might be denied and sent elsewhere for their own good.

Nashville for advanced coronary.

A Regional Hospital, while very good, is limited.

Both excellent points. Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville has a helicopter permanently stationed in Cookeville just for that purpose. Cookeville Regional Medical Center is partnered with Vanderbilt Medical Center, so this should come as no surprise.

In addition, Chattanooga's Erlanger Hospital (also a Level 1 Trauma Center) also has a helicopter permanently based in Cookeville.

Having CRMC partnered with one of the top hospitals in the entire country, and certainly within the South, and having two medical helicopters in town should be seen as a huge advantage, not as something to be scoffed at.
