Where to Retire has selected Cookeville, Tenn. as a top retirement destination in the sixth edition of “America’s 100 Best Places to Retire,” a comprehensive guidebook of the country’s most appealing retirement towns. The book, edited and published by the experts at Where to Retire magazine.

Editors and staff spent 11 months researching more than 800 cities across the U.S. The final selection includes 35 states. Cookeville, Gatlinburg and Knoxville are the only Tennessee cities listed.. Each city profile combines extensive research, local knowledge and in-depth interviews with retirees who made the move.

“This book allows readers to tap into the wisdom of hundreds of relocated retirees, including those who moved to Cookeville, one of our 10 best undiscovered towns,” said Where to Retire Editor Annette Fuller. “This volume will get you dreaming of your retirement and where you might land. But the stories also bring you past wistful dreams and into the realm of real research, including information on weather, taxes, downtown attractions and even the caveats of each city.”

Here I am trying to save money for retirement but I just spent money on this book! Haha. I can’t wait to read it- it should arrive in 2 days. I seem to be addicted to the “wistful dreaming “ but time flies and someday it will be a reality.

Yes, I have to remember time flies faster than you think sometimes. Will you be retiring, or finding work in new place? I will probably be looking for some work, even if part time.

At first I felt silly buying a book for reading a few pages on a couple places I’m interested in. However, I found it interesting to read the stories and personal experiences of retirees, even if they settled in places I know I'd not want to go to. I got some ideas on approaches to making the decision and ways to make the transition to a new place.

KTurtle: I felt the same way. But I like reading about people's experiences of getting to their retirement place(s). Looking forward to getting the book.

I don't know why we're celebrating this. Retirees are driving up the cost of living for locals, especially poor and younger locals.

Hi all,
My husband and I are considering various smallish towns/cities in Tennessee for retirement in a few years. Cookeville is on our short list. One issue that's confusing to me is - Cookeville is consistently ranked as a top retirement destination, but the housing seems to be somewhat limited in terms of:
1. New construction (I haven't found a lot of options for new homes.)
2. High-end finishes on newer homes
3. Subdivisions/neighborhoods with amenities (lawn maintenance, snow removal, etc.) as part of the HOA
4. Condo buildings
Perhaps I'm not looking in the right online spots for this information. If anyone can offer insight or guidance, I'd be very thankful. Have a good afternoon!

1. Lots of new construction in Cookeville. There's been something like 2,000 new housing units built in Putnam County in the last few years. What there's not, however, are large-scale mass produced housing developments by national builders although I do know that one that's currently in Nashville has said they're expanding to Cookeville.

2. I've seen high-end finishes in newer homes. Not sure what you're looking for.

3. Very few subdivisions in Cookeville have HOA fees and even fewer have community amenities like swimming pools. Many of the condo communities do. I'm pretty sure the Sugartree development includes lawn care with its HOA but it doesn't have a pool. White Plains is a large development around a golf course with high-end single family homes, and it has a pool and tennis courts but I don't know about lawn care. Here's a sampling of homes in the White Plains area that have recently sold:

4. Condos/townhouses are the big rage in Cookeville. On Zillow they're not necessarily listed as condos or townhouses for some reason. Here are some newer condos that have recently sold:
