Hi!

Is the soil in the Cookeville/Gainsboro area good for planting vegetable gardens? I'm looking for a rural area to live and one of my requirements is fertile soil for growing vegetables and fruit. I previously considered the Ozarks area MO/AR, but the soil there is very rocky. I prefer living in areas with the least tornado activity comparatively speaking, so I'm not keen on the central areas of many states.

Info appreciated. Thanks!

Gainesboro/Jackson County is pretty hilly, but most people around there seem to have gardens. Most of Cookeville/Putnam County is flatter except the extreme eastern and western ends of the county. Just about everyone I know there has a vegetable garden in their back yard.

The soil is mostly clay, but like soil anywhere, if you're willing to work with it and do the proper amendments, you can grow anything. We have quite a large garden in our yard, about 25' x 45' and it produces nicely. A little compost, peat and water go a long way!
