That's great to hear! Do you know where you're going to eat? A friend of mine who teaches French in Cookeville just emailed me all excited about a new French restaurant located downtown in the former bank vault of the old First Tennessee Bank on the Square. I think it's called Sebastian's. The owner is from the Alsace region of France (where I lived for 7 months) so I'm excited to hear about it.

As a teenager, the nicest place to eat in Cookeville was Shoney's. I'm glad to see it's gotten better.

Happy birthday to your wife!

Ya'll know Cookeville pretty well, not to be living here. I've lived here almost all my life (38 years). It has definately grown and it seems to get better with each passing day. There is also a new "fine dining" restaurant called "Rush and Company" it's just off Jefferson Ave. behind the Ryan's Restaurant. I don't know much about it. Oh, I almost forgot about Nick's Restaurant. It's a really good place to eat, it's on Jefferson Ave. up on the hill across from Shoney's (which by the way was the place I went to on my first date 20 years ago, it's much improved since then). Nick's has great food and it won't break the bank to eat there. And by the way, JMT, your exactly right about Ralph's Donuts. I have very fond memories of my trips to the donut shop with my grandpa. If you haven't tried them yet, you've got to try the eclairs(they use to be called "long john's" when I was a little girl). They are the BEST!

Just hearing you mention Ralph's Donuts is making my mouth water! I've been known to drive there from Knoxville (100 miles!) just for their twists. When I went to visit my parents in Hong Kong over the holidays, my dad had me bring some Ralph's cinnamon donuts; he swears they're the best in the world.

Hi kitty cat,

Cookeville is one of the places my wife and I will be visiting in August. We are looking for a place to retire. I would like to hear from a Cookeville resident such as yourself to find out more about your community. How do residents of the Cookeville feel about people moving there from out of state? Is there an abundance of property for sale available? Are you able to find all of the goods and services that you need in Cookeville, or do you have to drive to Knoxville or Nashville for certain things? How do you feel about the availability of healthcare in Cookeville? Your input and input from any other Cookeville resident would be appreciated.

Hi jguillot,

As a Cookevillian, I'd be delighted to tell you about my hometown. I have to say that it's quite easy to tell when someone is not a "native", we in general really don't mind people moving in here from other states unless they complain about stuff here or try to compare us to other folks and places that they have been. We just really are unique and not like other folks or places. Most of us feel that if they (people who move here from other states) don't like the way things are here, then they can move. As for property for sale, oh, yeah, there's lots of it. You can either be right in town or out in the country in only a matter of minutes. I grew up on a mountain called "Buck Mountain", I thought we were in the boonies, but in reality it's only about 5 miles from town. Right now, I live on the edge of a quiet subdivision with a creek running through my back yard, abundant with squirrels, rabbits, deer, and an occasional fox now and then. But it's only about 2 miles from the city limits. I have the best of both worlds. We right now have almost everything that a body could want. We only travel to Nashville (shorter distance that to Knoxville) when we want a change of scenes. We have so many specialty stores and doctors now that there is really no need to travel to the big cities anymore. There is also a little vacation spot about 2 to 2 1/2 hours west of us that is a must for anyone to visit. It's called Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, they are on the border of North Carolina. It's a perfect getaway for a few days to relax and regroup and it has some of the greatest shopping around like: Lenox, Disney outlet, Dewalt outlet, tons of hand made candy shops and so many more than I can possibly list. You just have to experience it for yourselves. The only thing that we don't have is a really big mall and a Target (but rumor is that it's in the works for both to come here soon). Healthcare is in abundance here also. We have specialist in just about every field that you can think of, from Cardiology/ Cardiothorasic Surgery to Endocrenology, Neurology/Neurosurgery to Nephrology, Oncology to Orthopedic, Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery to Psychiatry and everything in between. We have several clinics so folks don't have to go to the ER if their MD's are closed. We also have a rehab center connected to our hospitial for accident, stroke victim and the like. We have 3 nursing home in Cookeville and lots of home health agencies and home equipment places. If you can't find it here, then chances are, you really don't need it anyway. Hope this has helped, sorry it's so long but there's alot to say about our great community. Hope to see you in August and give you a proper "Welcome"!

Kitty Cat,

Thank you. The information you have provided certainly is helpful. The more I read about Cookeville, the more I want to visit. I can't wait until August. Thanks again and best wishes to you and your family.

Johnny

I love Buck Mountain! When I go to Cookeville, I always get off I-40 in Monterey and take the back road through Buck Mountain down into Cookeville. It's going to be great to see the railroad tracks rebuilt and the bike path built alongside the railroad tracks all the way from Monterey to Cookeville (and, hopefully, on to Baxter).

I can't remember where I read it, but Cookeville Regional Medical Center has one of the 5 busiest heart surgery units in the state; they're really good at it. It's the largest hospital between Nashville and Knoxville and is undergoing an $80 million expansion, essentially doubling its size.

Great to hear about the growth in Cookeville! Hubby and I were talking about our planned trip down in November. We'll be there for about a week, and base in Cookeville to see real estate and jobs for a few days, then we'll drive down to the Cleveland area near Chattanooga for the same.

Anyone know the reputation or can recommend the 'Americas Best Value Inn' in Cookeville? It's even cheaper than the cabins in the state parks! But, then again, I know - ya get what you pay for! Anyone know anything about it?

blessings, Shen

November should be a fun time to see Tennessee. It'll probably be pretty chilly, but I love our beautiful fall days with crisp, dry air and bright sunshine.

I've stayed in that America's Best Value Inn in Cookeville. About the only thing good I can say is there's a Quizno's right next door.

I'll PM you info on a hotel in Cookeville where I enjoy staying. It's not a national chain, although it used to be a Howard Johnson. It's run by a family from Austria who are just sooo nice and pleasant, and the rates are very good. It also is perched on top of a big hill with views of a beautiful valley down below called Poplar Grove.
