Cookeville - Shopping and Services
Alright, so the move to Cookeville draws closer, looking now to be in mid-June. Seeing as how I am a "poor college student" I'll be looking to purchase new apartment furnishings for as cheap as possible.
Two things that will prove to be important: A new bed and mattress and a comfy couch. Anywhere in town that will provide low-cost furniture?
My other questions are about digital cable and internet. I may be a poor college student, but the benefits of a dvr are tremendous. What cable service(s) is(/are) in town?
And internet! I need fast, reliable internet. Currently I am using the wireless my apartment complex in North Carolina provides, and it is not fast nor reliable, but is only $20/month.
I am sure I have more questions but currently that's all I can think of.

Eagle furniture is a neat place. I think we bought a recliner there for my mother. As a college student, it might not be that reasonable for you (even though it's not at all expensive really), but it's worth a try. If you are looking for cheap furniture just to get you through and you're OK with it maybe not lasting very long, there is some furniture at the Big Lots on Jefferson. I wouldn't bank on it lasting forever, but I think it is really pretty cheap. It also looks a bit cheap, but if you don't mind that...or you could try garage sales?
Cable/high speed internet is available from Charter. Their Cookeville office is on Broad Street. There is also a Comcast office on Broad Street but Comcast does not provide services in Cookeville. There apparently are two different DVR models available from Charter. Until very recently, you had to be placed on a waiting list until a DVR became available (I am not kidding). However, that might not be the case any longer. The DVR they will deliver automatically is the Moxie one and it's fine but does not have much memory. There is an upgraded DVR with a much bigger hard drive on it that holds at least twice what the Moxie holds, probably more like 3 or 4x. It also doesn't make obnoxious noises when you use it. We just had them deliver and install it a few weeks ago.
We have the mid-level upgraded high speed internet through Charter and it runs us $48.99 per month (not including all the outrageous taxes). I think there is a higher speed available now too, for another $10 per month but we don't have any need for that. I use the high speed internet connection for my job (I work at home) and there is a lot of data transfer--the mid-level one is perfectly fine. My employer even reimburses our internet fee and I didn't see the need for the upgrade. You could get the basic package for less than $49 per month, I'm pretty sure, especially if you get cable TV, too. They also usually offer like a six-month promotional pricing structure which is much cheaper.
We have a bunch of upgrades on our cable package, so it's kind of outrageous. We seem to have a bunch of movie channels and then the DVR plus another few cable boxes. I think it's around $75 for the TV part of the bill, but with the DVR we actually do record and watch some of those movies.
I absolutely hate the TV guide part of the Charter cable. It's ridiculous. Having the DVR helps because the menu/guide that comes with that is slightly better, but it's just all cluttered and not really that useful. Charter needs to look at Time Warner's guide and get with the program on that. Other than that one issue, we've been happy with Charter. Oh, well that and the fact that when they came to upgrade our outside lines, they left them lying on the grass for more than a month. They would probably still be lying on the grass if my husband hadn't called the city to ask if it was violating any kind of code to have wires stretched out for a hundred feet on our lawn. This was after multiple calls to Charter. The next day I walked outside and the cable was buried. Sheesh! Other than those two things, though, Charter has been great!

There are MANY furniture stores in Cookeville, both discount stores & name brand. The discount/local stores are probably the best way to go but you might be suprised at some of the good prices you find at places like Ashley & Badcock as well...
As for internet,I have Frontier DSL and am very happy with it.Maybe a hair slower than Charter cable but $10-$15 dollars cheaper. We get home phone & DSL for $70/month.
Welcome to Cookeville!

Hi, Our move to the Cookeville area is now less than a week away, and I was very exicted to see that someone has DSL service. I work from home and vastly prefer this service to cable as we don't have TV and seem to get ripped off when only buying the high-speed internet part of the package. I've tried to use dslreports.com but didn't have much luck finding service in the Cookeville area. Do you mind letting me know if you are in town or out and how your service is and anything else you'd like to share about DSL? Thanks so much!

When we first got DSL we had a lot of problems with slow service, outages, etc. Having a technical background I pursued the matter up the line to a regional manager from whom I got some straight answers. They realized they had a problem which I explained to them was only going to get worse because of a new housing development which was going to put further strains on their already overloaded system. They realized they had to invest in better equipment and upgrade what they had.
Well, they promised better service and they have delivered. Outages are rare and service is consistently good if not spectacular so I have no more complaints.

Free
For those on a limited budget (or not), there's always Freecycle.org. Find your local chapter on the website, there's usually one in every county. I know there's on for Putnam County.
Everything is FREE on FREEcycle. You post things that you want to give away, and someone emails you back requesting it. Or, you post for things that you want, and hopefully, someone will email you back that they have it and will give it to you for FREE.
FREEcycle is for stuff that some people just throw in the trash, or even give to Goodwill. This way, it's kept out of the trash, given directly to someone who needs it, and it's FREE! I've given away clothing, shoes, books, curtains, knicknacks, old computers and other electronic equipment, as well as just plain stuff and junque -- One man's Junk is another man's Treasure.
Keep it out of the landfill, and give it to someone who needs it.
blessings, Shen
