That's pretty much the norm here in Corpus so you'll be more than welcome and blend right in. Nobody seems to notice color here, and on that score, we're way ahead of most places.

Well, this is a huge plus also. Racism and hate crimes were two of the biggest things I feared in considering a move to Texas in general. Even way up here in the Pacific North West, we have heard all the stories about Texas. I'm glad I found an area where that sort of thing wont be an issue really. I dont understand nor do I aspire to that kind of thing, and want to make sure my daughters are safe from it as much as possible.
So far the positives outweigh the negatives regarding a possible move to CC or the surrounding areas. Positives: Great COL, affordable real estate, beaches, beaches and did I say BEACHES, tolerant people, well maintained natural beauty, wildlife, sealife, the Ocean, a small town feel, proximity to vacation spots like Mexico and Jamaica, close to a major city without BEING a major city in case I wanted to test some of the big city vibe occasionally (Where i live the nearest big city is Seattle and its a 6 hr drive away), No snow (I wont have to dig my way out of 25 ft of snow every winter or worry about having an accident because of ice on the roads YAY!!!), warm temps (to me 40 degrees in the winter is WARM, since we average about 20 below ZERO here in the PNW) The list goes on.
Negatives: slow development, bad schools (mainly in the CC area not outlying areas), crime (thats everywhere especially desirable areas like beach towns), some gang activity (everywhere), Drug Trafficking (scary but avoidable I hope), Some rough scenery (in CC due to refineries, Im assuming oil refineries), and the threat of an occasional hurricane (insurance and an evacuation plan makes it less scary, a blizzard and 25 feet of snow is a LOT scarier to me).
Interesting........

One other thing to watch for in CC. Those of us who live within 5 miles of water got dumped by our insurance companies as they pulled out of the area. The only major ins co I know of that will insure us is Allstate and the others are no names. I carry flood insurance, homeowner's, and wind. That adds up when you have 3 policies to pay for.

I currenlty have Allstate and have been with them in two previous states. Glad to know they are available for coverage in that area, but hate that three insurances will have to be carried!

this thread is kind of old, and since all the responses about interracial marriage were more or less accurate ill address something else.
If you want to find organic/health foods, go to Sun Harvest. It's the only major grocery store in town that has stuff like that. There might be others, but this one is right on the main thoroughway.

Well its official. We are definitely moving to Corpus. My husband got the final word on the job and he's been hired as the new Provost at Del Mar College. So we will be coming into town this weekend. I think we will focus our look at the neighborhood north of Alameda between Oso Bay and Everhart (maybe as far as Doddridge) during this trip, though there are some areas closer to towntown I want to look at. Our next trip will focus on the southside.
We are looking forward to working with the college and I am hoping to plug into the arts. I'm a full-time artist and need more of an art community than I've found in East Texas. It will be interesting to find out how much more all the insurances will run in buying a house on the gulf. I know we'll have to purchase wind, flood, etc. I hear people complain about being insurance poor there. We hope to find a house under $250K but it would be nice finding one around $200K and upgrading some of it ourselves. We seem to have a nice real estate agent that has been recommended by our agent here. Luckily we don't have to worry about schools as my chilren are grown and my husband's children live with their mom out of the state and visit only durring the summer and holidays. They will be pumped about the beach and the fishing opportunities.
