couldnt have summed it up any better. this says it all.
i will say that the Nueces County Fairgrounds in Robstown is ONE thing that the county did RIGHT. it is absolutely gorgeous. Calallen aint too bad.
i just simply did not like the area AT ALL. i moved here to Ft Hood area and i am very happy. best move i ever made. i love Gatesville, Lampasas, and the southwestern edge of Copperas Cove where I live. it is absolutely gorgeous. breathtaking drives...lots of hills, winding roads, quaint country hamlet towns....this IS the Texas i know. i can drive to Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, Austin in an hour and have so much to explore within an hour radius that i will never be bored. and if i need to go to a city, i am just a few hours from both DFW and San Antonio! it is a PERFECT location.
you couldn't pay me enough to move back to South Texas...........

Many Texans and Austin in many regards does this already. In the eyes of many Texans, these parts aren't really Texas but rather Northern extensions of Mexico. The Valley doesn't count, Laredo is a crime hotbed and Corpus is dull and boring. Couple this with the low levels of education in these areas and you get low wages and underdevloped land. Potential is meaningless when people have this attitude.

And the outlet mall is more than likely to happen. I dont agree with it being built by Robstown, but its right next to the highway and it is prime, cheap land! And many new small shopping centers are being built on about a weekly basis along 624 and Saratoga. And ya, Corpus's population is only going up 4 or 5 thousand people a year, but thats because everyone is moving to the burbs. Like Portland and Calallen/Annaville. Down 624 just outside of the city limits. And the only reason I was excited about Jack in the Box is because it is my favorite restaurant and they were never in Corpus til about a month ago now. So thats why I brought that up. But I really agree with you about the citizens banding together and electing new officials. Nothing but a bunch of old farts run this city and try to keep it hidden from the world and try to keep it the little city it is today. All they care about are the little businesses and dont want to let anything new in. So I really agree with you on that.

No, I never said those projects weren't happening but even those projects are a sign of just how slow and marginalized the growth has been in Corpus and its metro area. As for the 4,000-5,000 a year number, that is for the metro area not the city of Corpus.

Insomniac, lots of people like free money. But unlike many in the Valley and Laredo, lots of people like to earn their money. In the aforementioned triangle you have countless people flaunting the fact they drive a brand new Explorer AND are on LoneStar AND take advantage of Section 8 housing programs. The government dependency some have in the Valley is sickening. The apathy government officials have toward their constituency even more so. Pay for college graduates in that region is an insult and a big reason these areas are looked down upon by the rest of Texas. I once had an interview with Texas State Bank when I first moved down. The interviewer literally told me anything south of 10 doesn't count in her book and she could not wait to get out of that dump. Yes, a person representing a major financial institution told me this. In person. At an interview. Could you imagine this happening in Dallas, Houston or San Antonio? And thanks for joining in, Bellestar. I think you could quote countless people who feel the same way you do about the "triangle". I can't say that I do, but I am not from Texas. My wife is from the Valley. And as soon as she graduated, she moved to Houston. Ironically, my former teaching partner is from Brownsville. Guess what she did as soon as she graduated? Guess how often she visits?

it is NOT my imagination that there is a WHOLE lot more indigents in South Texas and Rio Grande Valley. there is a very good reason that physician malpractice rates TRIPLE anywhere south of the Nueces River. very large amount of litigation in the medical community. there are alot of folks down there who try to sue because it is their only hopes to make some big bucks. i have never ever in my 16 years practice, ever had the fear of litigation as i did down there. there is a REASON why medical professionals make so much down there-it's the only way they can get folks to practice down there.
i am SO glad i am out of there. living and working down there was the worst mistake i ever made in my whole life. now that i am out of there, i have regained my spirit and my soul.

Corpus Christi: why underdeveloped?
I wonder how long you have been absent from Corpus Christi. Not many lots left on bayfront at this time 10-2007 and those remaining all >$1,000,000.
The community seems very involvved and concerned, at times maybe even too much. It is amazing what a difference in viewpoint can bring to light.
Hope you revisit soon and get to know the community better.

Sorry, I laugh at what you have to say and anyone who reads this should take everything you say at face value. You're the one who writing these critiques of South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley when you've never lived in the Rio Grande Valley or anywhere outside of Kingsville in South Texas.
