Moving to Corpus Christi, Texas (Houston, Dallas: real estate, 2011, rent)

Hi my name is Maureen, I am curious about Corpus Christi, Texas beings that my boyfriend is in the Coast Guard and he will be working for a Coast Guard Air station and a possible place is Corpus Christi. I will be moving with him so we have been researching some areas he could possible be stationed. We are in our mid twenties and love the outdoors and enjoy hiking, biking, running and basically anything outdoors. We are very laid back people originally from South New Jersey. He is currently stationed in Alaska but will be leaving sometime in the summer to a new station, possibly Corpus Christi. I currently work as a Speech Pathologist in a private school setting but I am looking to eventually get a job in a hospital. So if anyone has any information about living in Savannah and cost of houses and job opportunities please let me know, we would greatly appreciate it!

We are actually thinking of leaving Corpus for Savannah ,, this has been my home 45 years with the exception of 10 combined years in , Houston, OKC, and Europe ( hubby is Dutch ) .He works for the Navy as a contractor. Your OK stationed here for awhile , but things have changed not for the better,

I have checked Savannah , cleaner , just better ,,,,, surprisingly better house prices , but we only rent .

i spent one year in 2005 in Savannah and all i can say is that I would pick Wilmington Island hands down as a place to live if you were to live in Savannah..mostly for safety, and of course, because it's just clean and pretty. and i cant believe i am saying this, as a diehard Texas rules person who loves my State of Texas and truly think there is no other better state to live in, but.....
if right now I were given only two choices-to stay in Texas but I would have to live in Corpus Christi or the surrounding area, or live in Wilmington Island/Savannah for the rest of my life, i would have to pick Wilmington Island. gosh i cant believe i am saying this. but thats how much i disliked Corpus and South Texas in general.....

I've lived in Texas all my life. Born in the valley, moved when I was 15 to Houston, lived there for 12 years,in San Antonio for 1 year and had job opportunity in Chicago. Lived there for 1 year and could not stand the cold wind, so made the mistake of moving to Dallas metroplex, Arlington, to be exact. I'm now considering moving to Corpus in 3 to 5 years and love the beach atmosphere. My husband and I just don't like cold weather', he's from the North. I've always wondered why I didn't move back by the beach, but who knows what I was thinking, I was young then. I'm 45 and would prefer somewhere near the beach with warmer weather. I can survive humidy, I survived Houston and I don't recall hot weather being a major problem in south Texas (Harlingen), but I sure miss S.Padre Island and laid back atmosphere, hate busy big city life. Anyway, I'm 45 years old and have always considered moving south near the beach. We have considered moving to South Padre but slow economy there, not alot of business there so Corpus was another option.
Arlington is horrible with allergies, I never had any until I moved here and I read somewhere that this area is the worst place to live if you have allergies. Are allergies bad in Corpus? I don't recall having allergies in the valley when I was growing up, nor in Houston or San Antonio. My husband has suffered from allergies 'mountain cedar, pollen' all his life. He suffers more than I do. Please help?

Here is a section I wrote on a couple of different topics:

If you move to Corpus, I would recommend Flour Bluff or Calallen. And Portland has better schools than most of Corpus, but not than Calallen ISD. Most grocery stores as said above are H-E-B. Its a nice grocery store. There are a couple of H-E-B Pluses. Those are really nice! Better than Wal-Mart in my opinion. There is also a few Wal-Marts and a Sun Harvest for grocery stores here. Oh ya, and one Sam's Club.

For shopping, the only good mall is Padre Staples Mall. There is also Moore Plaza and Sunrise Mall. But I wouldn't recommend Sunrise Mall. A new outdoor lifestyles center is being built in Corpus. Kind of like an outdoor mall. The Calallen/Robstown area is also getting an outlet mall before too long. Oh ya, by the way, Padre Staples Mall is about to get a whole new make-over/expansion. Almost to unrecognizable porportions. So that is exciting.

The cost of living down here is considerably lower than in Seattle. So I am sure if you can make a living in Seattle, you can deffinently make it down here.

The downtown area for the city is very nice for its size. It has a few nice sky-scrapers as well. The city council is currently trying to revitalize it though. A couple of buildings are currently being renovated for condo's. And there is a strict abandon building ordinance being placed for the area. So hopefully businesses will once again get attracted to the area.

And the three fastest growing areas of Corpus are on the southside, Flour Bluff, and Calallen. All of the areas are urbanizing/suburbanizing. Portland is also growing very quickly. Its only about a five minute drive from the downtown area of Corpus and about a fifteen minute drive from the main shopping corridor in Corpus named S.P.I.D. South Padre Island Drive. That is where pretty much everything is around here.

As for recreation. There is plenty to do down here, especially if you like the outdoors. There is Arena football, Hockey, division one college basketall, professional baseball and semi professionall baseball. If you like the outdoors, there is wind surfing, hunting, surfing, and nice walks along the bayfront downtown. Its always windy down here. We should be the real "windy city".

There is also the art museum, the USS Lexington, the Texas State Aquarium, and more.

The weather down here is nothing like Seattle. The only time its cool down here is November-Feburary. During the summer its hot and very humid. As a matter of a fact, Corpus Christi is the hottest city in the U.S. with heat indicies included. During the summer, the months of July-September the heat indicies average up to 110 degrees during the day time and 90 degrees during the night. Not to say that it doesn't get cold down here, because sometimes, it does. We get sleet about once a year. Its very light though when we do get it. Nothing big to shut the city down. It will freeze about 3-10 times a year. Every once in a while it wont get about 32 degrees all day. When it snows, if you even wanna say it does, its just a flurry or two. No accumulation. About once every two-three decades we will get a snow storm. In christmas eve-christmas morning of 2004, the city itself got 4 1/3 inches of snow. Out here in Calallen we got 11 inches at my house. But its super rare that it would happen. Anyways, in the summer dont expect the tempature to drop below 73 degrees until October. In the winter it can be cold, but its nothing like up north.

My husband and I are thinking of re-locating to Corpus Christi in the near future. We are in our 50's and I have a teenage son. I would like to know where we can find job postings, I'm a Medical Lab Tech and my husband is heavy equipment operator in the construction field. Also I was wondering about real estate, the best area to live in (avg housing cost $150-$200 thousand). Even if anyone has any info it would be helpful. Also, would you recommend learning Spanish?

In terms of areas in which to live, I would recommend looking into the Portland or Calallen areas. Both areas are very nice and have good schools for your son. Your money will probably go a little further in Calallen, but I would recommend seeing both areas and deciding which one suits you better.

Don't worry about learning Spanish...it isn't necessary. You'll probably pick up a bit by living in Corpus, though.

just google Christus Spohn Hospital and look at their website-tons of jobs listed for medical personnel. though i woudn't recommend working for them but that's just me....if i were you, i would pick Driscoll Children's Hospital.

Well, here's my .02 worth. I've lived in CC since 1988 and while I'm not thrilled with our city government, I still like it here and that's coming from a guy who grew up in South Jersey as well.

I agree...Driscoll Children's Hospital is the way to go for work especially for a speech pathologist and I agree with Calallen area for housing. An area that's booming for the medical field is down in the Valley in McAllen. It seems hospitals are everywhere and the cost of living is a little less than CC.
