I have a painting that I inherited from my grandmother that I would like to have appraised for insurance/tax purposes. I will consider selling or auctioning the piece, as it holds very little sentimental value for me. I know nothing about the art world and need some guidance. I live in Seattle, WA, but the piece is by a painter from Rockport. I am not sure if a local appraiser would be more beneficial to determining the painting's value than a remote one. Does anyone have any guidance or recommendations on obtaining an appraisal and selling/auctioning it?

Call the "Art Center" on Shoreline and they should be able to find you a local appraiser familiar with the person's work.
