Does anyone know the history of the ruins in the dunes close to the Jetty? When I was a young child my family spent a lot of weekends fishing the jetty and we kids would run the beach until we knew where every broken sand dollar and dead fish was between the jetty and the pier. Soon we started exploring the dune area and found the old ruins. They looked like old WWII gun emplacements or observation bunkers. Concrete construction with steel rails embedded in the floor.
I have never found anything written about them and wonder if there is any actual knowledge of them remaining.

You might email the museum about it director@portaransasmuseum.org. I looked at google earth way back and it looks about the same in 1956 GLO aerials as it does today in the satellite. It's still there on the other side of the road from the University complex. I texted the head of the historical society for an answer and he confirms it was an anti sub gun turret.

Wiki says the following: During World War II, an artillery gun turret was erected by the United States Army and maintained throughout the war, on a high dune just off Cotter St. across from the UT campus, and is now part of the UT properties. It was placed to protect the pass from sightings of German U-boats.

The whole site is now a park which is also a telltale sign it was a military installation. Lots of that land was given to the cities post war when the military got out of the coastal gun business in favor of missiles.

Battery 155 - Port Aransas (1942-1944) - Battery 155 - Port Aransas was a temporary, World War II, 155mm coastal gun battery on Panama mounts. Located on Port Aransas Military Reservation, Nueces County, Texas. Battery construction started 26 Nov 1942, was completed 13 Dec 1942 and transferred to the Coast Artillery for use 11 Nov 1943 at a cost of $ 24,726.42. Deactivated in 1944.Originally built as a temporary World War II coastal gun battery with two 155mm M1918 rapid fire guns mounted on M1917 Mobile Carriages emplaced on circular Panama mounts.

The 155mm guns replaced a temporary 105mm howitzer field artillery battery on 11 Apr 1942. The two Panama mounts were placed on mounds that were stabilized with gunite. The mounds raised the gun trunion elevation to 37' 6". Both of the Panama mounts were of the 360 degree variety. Ramps were provided to allow positioning of the guns on the Panama mounts. Five splinter proof magazines were provided along with a 23' by 17' plotting room.

The Temporary Harbor Defense of Aransas Pass was deactivated on 1 Jul 1944 and on 3 Jul 1944 the guns were removed. The troops departed on 4 Jul 1944.
