Default Why so many churches in Yorktown area?

When driving down Staples, across to Yorktown, I can't help but notice that there seems to be a HUGE church on every corner. Were these churches there before the city's expansion or after? It seems to me that they take up a lot of tax base for schools from the City's taxpayers and contribute to urban sprawl that has plagued other cities. I wouldn't mind it if they were modest buildings or paid their fair share of taxes, but they aren't and they don't.

Churches are popular in small towns since there are very little other social activities. Gotta have some place to meet the opposite sex so you can get sinful.

Churches tend to follow youthful population, housing construction and a wealthier demo. I don't see how it has anything to do with small towns. If you look at the growing areas of Austin, you'll see churches on every corner there as well.
