Portland Texas???
My family is considering a move. Huband's job has an opening in Corpus Christi and we were looking at areas around for possibly relocating to. Portland seemed like a nice town, but I have no knowlege of how it really is.
crime?
schools?
flooding?
businesses?
cost of living?
jobs?
any help would be greatly appreciated or naming other areas we could look into would help too. somewhat close to the airport is preferable.
thanks in advance

Portland and Calallen are desirable outskirts of Corpus Christi. Both have the best school districts. Calallen, however, is only 10 minutes from the airport. You should know that Corpus doesn't have "traffic", so no matter where you live, driving to and from the airport won't be a problem. It's been years since I've been to Portland, so I can't answer too many demographic questions about it -- what sort of job are you looking for? A majority of people who live in Portland and Calallen work in Corpus since it's about a 10-20 minute commute, but if you're looking for something small for yourself such as a grocery store, retail, shops, restaurants near by for employment, both can offer that. We are below the cost of living average in the United States (check out realtor.com for home prices. Calallen area code is 78410). My personal preference is to be inland, which is why I like it out here during hurricane season. Granted, we still have to evacuate during a storm, but my property just feels safer here than near the coast.

Callanmom WRONG! Why not read the latest TEA ratings before you type. Gregory - Portland schools are rated as "Acceptable" the same as Corpus and those aren't good ratings. At least school by school GP is somewhat better.
The two best districts in the area are Port Aransas and Aransas County ISD ( Rockport) although Flour Bluff is right up there. Port A is rated Exemplary the top. ACISD is only about 40 students away from Exemplary at Recognized.

Pull the stick out of your rear, seriously...
And since we're going to jump up and scream like animals that something is "WRONG", it's spelled Calallen, not "Callan".

Unfortunately, there aren't any websites specifically catered to Calallen except for their school site. Calallen Independent School District
If you have anymore questions, there are quite a few people who live out here in this area and can answer you to the best of our abilities.

MOM There is the TEA website DUH it ranks all the schools. Flour Bluff is your best bet lower taxes than Calallen and quite a bit better. Its still on water but sheltered a bit. Parts of Rockport have barrier islands - I sit and watch hurricanes from my deck- unless they are really bad.
I have thread here with all the area districts, ratings and tax rates.

Calallen was rated as - both in district and in high school, recognized in 2009
Gregory Portland was rated as - acceptable in 2009
Flour Bluff was rated as - I could not find the high school. But grades 1-2 were exemplary, and grades 5-6 were recognized.
Here are the links:
Calallen District
Calallen HS
Gregory Portland
Flour Bluff Primary
Flour Bluff Intermediate
By the way, Calallen is its own school district, not part of CCISD.

That sir is a lie. The only differences between Calallen and Flour Bluff are:
Flour Bluff has an H-E-B Plus, but not a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Calallen has a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Flour Bluff is closer to S.P.I.D., but Calallen is closer to Labonte Park on the river and is closer to the lake. Another difference is that Calallen's football team is WAY better than Flour Bluff's!!! Lol.

well, the walmart supercenter MAY just be the tie breaker between those too. i am quite wary of being THAT close to the water though (in flour bluff...)
