I used to want to move to Corpus so badly. I lived in SA and would go every weekend. Then I moved to Panama City Beach and after living there and going back to Corpus, I found Corpus disgusting and an eyesore.....much like Galveston, but that's just my opinion. As far as property taxes go.....you can't run from it in this state because the entire state has high property taxes.

I am thinking about moving to Corpus in January. I will graduate college in december and I am so sick of Dallas, been here for 16 years or so. I am only looking for a small apartment in the $500's, and a job as a server. I found out the place i currently work at is even building a location there in the spring. I went for the first time a week ago and fell in love with the city. a downtown besides an ocean? gorgeous!!!!! I love the beach and it looks like a great place for a loner like me. I'd only be living here for about a year or so if I did go through with this. any problems i should be aware of?

I looked at the statistics you posted and was amazed to see that I live in one of the areas with the highest incidence of rape. In all my 30+ years hear, I remember hearing of only a couple of cases of forcible rape. I'm hoping I can talk to our community policing officer or someone else about it soon to see if it's as rampant as the statistics indicate, or if it is somehow reported in a more liberal fashion. I never feel afraid in my neighborhood and have run and walked my dog at all hours. I don't dispute your post or statistics, but they don't square with my experience.

Come on down! If you love the beach, you'll have a great time. And you should be able to find a small apartment for $500 without much trouble.

Those statistic come directly from the police department website. I think rape is one of those crimes that the victims don't talk about much. Unlike if your neighbor is robbed they will tell everyone.

I have to disagree with you about Galveston. It at least has the authentic feel of an old seaport city. Corpus, even along the waterfront doesn't have that.

You are right, if you goggle "compare crime rate by city" there are some good sites that allow you to do that. Here are the results from one of them. Sorry this is a little hard to read. I tried to format the text into columns but the forum software isn't showing it.

It shows that in many areas Galveston has a higher crime rate, even when the actual number of incidents are lower. However, in some areas the actual number of incidents, such as rapes do not jive with what the Corpus Christi Police reports.

Latest 2006 Crimes per 100,000 People:

Corpus Christi, TX Galveston, TX National

Murder: 7.2 6.8 7
Forcible Rape: 57.29 203.07 32.2
Robbery: 160.5 280.9 205.8
Aggravated Assault: 485.1 512.7 336.5
Burglary: 1030.9 1111.8 813.2
Larceny Theft: 5235.2 3854.9 2601.7
Vehicle Theft: 299.1 514.4 501.5

Actual Reported Population and Crimes:
Corpus Christi, TX Galveston, TX

From what I gather of CptRons reports there, are that Galveston actually has a WORSE crime rate, due to the ratio of people. Based on the populations given by CptRon, Corpus has 4.93 times more people than Galveston, thus based on a ratio scale, the only area where Corpus has Galveston BARELY beat in more crime, is Larceny Theft. This is in the Actual Reported crimes. On the whole, Corpus Christi's crime rate is really not that bad, when these factors are taken into consideration.

I haven't been in this area all that long, but its miles above Wichita Falls (where I came from after living there for 15 years). I truly enjoy the scenery, the great outdoor activities and what not. One thing I smirk about is how people are so apt to complain, rather than to try and do something about it. Its one thing to talk about the trash you see, the crimes and what not, but proactiveness is quite absent. If you see trash, by golly, pick it up! Start a neighborhood watch if crime is your concern. Get to know the people, and get out of your shell. Part of what makes a society work is people working TOGETHER to make it better. Be a leader, not a complainer. There are many volunteer sources out there, ways to get things done if you take the time to do them, rather than have someone else take up for your lack of motivation.

Just my .02. Take it for what its worth.

Ian
