I like looking at the pictures of the cities around the country. Looking at the corpus christi pics, looks kind of nice. It makes me kind of want to visit but when I think of corpus I think of the show "COPS." They did a lot of episodes there, is there a crime problem in corpus? What is there to do while your there and would I need to learn spanish to get around?
they did a lot of episodes in Corpus? i had NO idea and i used to watch that show quite a bit. they SHOULD have done the show in Savannah GA cuz i tell ya, i have lived near both cities in the past 4 years and Savannah SCARES ME TO DEATH with violent crime. i have never been fearful in Corpus
You would not need to learn to speak Spanish and I've never heard of anyone filming any COPS shows here. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I don't think it's a particularly dangerous place to live.
As far as things to do, you could go to the Texas State Aquarium, visit the Lexington (WWII aircraft carrier/museum), the art museum, the science and history museum or the Asian cultures museum. You could go fishing, windsurfing (take a lesson if you need to), kayaking, birding or just go to the beach. Depending on the time of year you could go to a AA league baseball game, an indoor football game, a hockey game or a college basketball game. There's a little bit of live music and lots of Mexican food and some seafood to be eaten.
Depending on your occupation you may be pushed out of the running if you are not bilingual. There are many positions here that require such. Also, unless you have the means to buy a home here in a decent area, I would not recommend moving here. Look a bit closer at Corpus. The pictures are all of the bayfront and select pics of the ocean closer to South Padre. South Padre is not in Corpus. Sorry, don't mean to blow your bubble, but I would recommend staying as far away from here as possibleModerator cut: offensive. Corpus is a totally backwards city with no true progress intended for the people who live here unless you are one of the select few that rule.

Reason: Make your point without racist comments or you will receive infractions.
the way you described this area is right on target. believe me, i wish i didnt feel this way..i wish i had moved here and found another place in my beloved State of Texas where i would be satisfied with my quality of life. this just aint Texas...not the Texas i know........it might be nice to visit every now and then..the beaches are nice...but to live, no way....

WoW --------> I gotta agree with Buluga & BelleStarOfTexas :
I moved to Corpus Christi in 2006. This was one of the biggest mistakes of my life!
The city is run by about 5 or 6 families. Nothing gets approved unless they kiss the deal! Nothing ! This is one Very Crooked city
Ok, I moved here for a developement project on North Padre Island in 2006. I sold my home in Denver moved to Corpus to be on the ground floor of a 15 year project for hotels & resort developement on the island.... after being here a few months. Several fisherman & surfers started a patition to keep the automobiles on the beach... Well, the Developement Co. spending 1.5 Billion on the project said No Way! we want kids & families on the beach not cars!
To make a long story short, these Patition People were successful keeping cars on the Beach & everything nice & new OUT... Still a great place for a tractor Pull !! just not to nice for Tourists !! kinda dirty gross ! Lottsa Seaweed everywhere & no developement to keep up the beach!
Now, to be fair. There is an old beat up Holiday inn on the beach, you can't evan eat outside. Real Old and crappy.
Now, lets talk about the city of Corpus Christi. This place is stuck in the 80's.
There is hardly any retail shopping ! Again same old story. a 37 year old Padre Staples ( indoor ) Mall. Everyone in Corpus drives 130 miles to San Antonio for supplies once or twice a month. Corpus has only ONE SuperMarket Chain, Texas Owned H.E.B.... Let me tell you, nothing is ever on sale. These guy's will rip your lips off....! They sell one National Brand & Their store brand, that's it ! Take it or leave it ! Oh, and there is the Chamber of Anti-Commerce. If anyone wants to come in here and compete with their businesses.... Well, let's just say. That won't happen around here. YaHear!
Ok, so you want to buy a home here, OK. Let's start by saying. Home prices are on the low side. Until you factor in Property Taxes 5 times higher than I paid in Denver. My Water & Trash in Corpus are 4 times higher than in Denver & the water is GROSS! Elec & Gas bills worse too, do to some strange selection process where you pick your provider. Well guess what? it's kinda like DeRegulation of the phone Co. The Price SkyRocketed !!! Enough Said !
Oh, then there is Insurance. You will need Plenty. Wind & Flood, plus your car insurance will go up to. Because no one in Corpus has a drivers license, let alone car insurance.... P.S. better keep a close eye on your car here. They sorta disappear, especially at movie theaters!
Now, lets talk about the Media. Local T.V. & Radio station are down right primitive. Plus they Suck Up to the controling families who run Corpus.
I could go on & on, you get my drift. I'll be the first to tell you I hate Corpus. What you need to know is, most people from outside Texas do! However, their are many Texans from equally challenged towns in Texas that think this is a step up, and having visited a few of these towns. their right! As bad as it is here. Robstown & Alice Texas are worse.
So if your looking for a 21st century city with potential & a rosy future, keep looking. This is not it. Let's face it. They havn't a clue here! They think Olive Garden is Fine Dining, Really, they evan like chain restaurants, but then if your seeking good Mexican Food, you would think you could find it here, right! Wrong, I haven't found any good food in this whole town and I've been here over a year. If you like filling up at the trough, well then your in hog heaven, most restaurants are Buffet dining all you can eat. By the way, they can eat a lot too! When I first got here, I noticed everyone drove these 3/4 ton Trucks....now I know why! You see, everyone is so fat here. They can't fit in an average car. So they drive these 3/4 ton trucks! Evan Starbucks has to have a drive thru window. Because these people just don't want to move.
If your moving here? Good luck! I'm trying to get out of here as we speak, I was very optimistic for the 1st 6 months. But, after a while reality starts sinks in. you realize you've made a huge mistake. This mistake has cost me many thousands of dollars. All I ask is you look real close before you leep !

Honest and Blunt..
yes, i know FIRSTHAND that folks around here dont drive with Drivers Licenses and/or INSURANCE. i couldnt believe it.
within the first two months of being here, my pickup truck was hit by one of them low class idiots (and i NEVER get into wrecks)...and then i find out that i have to pay my deductible cuz he had NO insurance. they didnt even haul him off to jail for driving without a drivers license. yeah...its the corrupt police department here-everyone knows everyone and they will cover for each other, take bribes etc...unless you are ANGLO.
and when you talk about restaurants, i still cant believe how UN-ORIGINAL Corpus is...when i flew down here for an interview, my Flour Bluff friend wanted to meet and go out to dinner...i asked for something very "local" and "original" and that had the feel for "Corpus"...she chose ON THE BORDER CAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hello! i have been to the CHAIN in Wichita Falls and other cities! this was just the first "HINT" that those around Corpus are hung up on the generic standards...........look at the restaurants listings. for a city this big, there are definitely smaller ratio of privately owned unique restaurants, and VERY few seafood ones, surprisingly, being ON THE FREAKIN GULF.
this is the most BORING BORING city of its size. i have to say, if i were going to live in a city of this size, i would even choose Wichita Falls over it-at least Wichita Falls you can find good ole mom and pop bbq joints and excellent UNIQUE TO THE AREA, NOT CHAIN Texas steakhouses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I totally regret moving to this area and cant wait till September when my lease is finally up and I can head to the Hill Country. Lampasas here I come!

Wow, I cannot believe I have finally seen some posts of the real deal about Corpus Christi and the sad state it is in. I came from California and have had the blues since I came here.
Both Honest and Blunt and BelleStarofTexas couldn't have said it better.
I sold my house and I am moving, finally. I have been runoff the road by police with no regard as to my safety on the 361 as well as the 286. Why are they in such a hurry without any lights on? People don't know how to drive here. Never had an accident in my life and I have avoided way too many here. State Farm or Farmers Insurance wrote an article around 05 and stated Corpus Christi had the highest rate of accidents in the entire State of Texas or the U.S. I don't remember which one it was, I just know it explained why my insurance rates were so high.
Frustrated about the Hog Tied in Corpus

Wow, some very disillusioned and unhappy campers in Corpus. You can not compare Corpus to Denver anymore than you can compare Minneapolis to Chicago for example. Perhaps the powers to be in Corpus are more straight forward and as blunt as you guys are. The "families" and "good old boys club" control every city, it is just more apparent in a smaller city because you know who they are. There are many cities with grocery stores owned by the same family or corporation (even though they may own grocery stores under different names). Many cities have drive thru starbucks, lol. Many cities have alot of SUVs and pickup truck drivers, especialy smaller cities. There is nothing wrong with the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach, a Holiday Inn is a Holiday Inn and you cant compare it to a Hilton or Omni (and your not paying that price to stay at a Holiday Inn either). Few smaller cities have family owned and mom and pop resturants, the chains have taken over everywhere. There is as much of a selection of shopping as there is in any city the size of Corpus. Many people drive from a city of 300,000 to a city of over a million to shop. In Minneapolis they come from all over the world to shop at Mall of America and its just a big mall, nothing more. You want high property taxes, try Minnesota or Wisconsin (and there are many more) that make property taxes look reasonable in Corpus (and they all have income taxes in addition).
I am not saying Corpus has done everything right and has not missed development opportunities (the empty residential and commercial lots along Shoreline and Ocean Drive prove that) but to make it sound that Corpus is any different politically than any other city of the same size is untrue. In my hometown of 10,000 in Mn, 2 familties owned most of the county and that was just the way it was until the kids starting moving away, the grandparents and parents passed on and the kids sold their "holdings". Now another family owns half the county, lol. If your a big city person, you have to stay in the big city. If your a mid size or small size city person, you have to stay in a mid or small size city. If your a small town person, then you have to live in a small town. Just like small company people are not happy in a corporation and visa virsa. As they say, "it is what it is" and thats how you have to look at it and deal with it. Patience is a virtue, procrastination is a sin. It always amazes me how people have this fantasy that everyone and everything is democratic and equal in every aspect. There will always be the have and the have nots, there will always be those with money and those without and there will always be those with politcal power and control and those who will never have it. It has been that way since the beginning of civilization and will always be that way. Of course you have those that believe everything they see and hear and those with perceptions that just are not fact. I am not looking for the Emerald City or utopia, or as a local talk show host says here, the Euphorians are merely dreamers and have no sense of reality. Finally, the un-insured motorist problem is nationwide (can you say immigration problem). Minneapolis has the highest Somali population in the entire country and if I had an hour I could list all the illegal activities we have assoicated with that specific population as you could with the mexican population. Just some things to think about. It is what it is and you feel as you do for a reason.
