Hey fellow travelers, just returned from a great river cruise in Europe. We took a 14 day (ship time, add one day each way for travel from the US) cruise from 10/19-11/3, Basel, Switzerland to Antwerp, Belgium.
We had a great time and really enjoyed the small (and not so small) port stops on the Rhine and Mosel rivers. Antwerp has 480 distinct beer varieties!!! If you do a similar cruise --- be warned, take slacks with elastic waistlines, the food was stupendous and ---- very bad for the waistline.

Yep, I've become a big fan of river cruising. We've done the Rhine from Amsterdam to Vienna, Moscow to St. Petersburg and the recent one from Basel to Antwerp, with many more to come. The beauty of it is only unpacking once, the same bed every night and our trips (all with one company, geared towards American retirees) are basically all inclusive (great food and excursions). Its hard to beat it for non-hassled travel.
We've done land tours (basically bus rides) and will again because the rivers don't go everywhere, but when possible --- river cruising is a great way to go.
Yes, there are usually a few under 50's folks, but they are an exception. The company we've been enjoying, Grand Circle Travel (Google GCT) is primarily oriented to serving the retiree, American market.
The Russian trip was absolutely outstanding and one I can recommend without reservation. A trivia point, Moscow has been the cleanest major city we've ever visited, with subway stations that are literally works of art. Safe and happy travels to you.
The Mosel is my favorite drive in the world, closely followed by Oak Creek Canyon Road in Sedona.

You're only on the ship as much as one chooses, there are daily port visits and you have the option to visit local ports each day.

I understand that, but the short distance in that length of time would kill me.
I'm glad you enjoyed your time and there's a lot in the region to enjoy.
Did you make it into Strasbourg, in Alsace?
I hope you made it to Bernkastle and Trier on the Mosel.
Did you get some great chocolates in Belgium? The home of frites is Belgium. Great museums in Antwerp, the home of Peter Paul Rubens... beer and museums in Brussels. Did you get to Brugges or Ghent?
I live in Germany and travel to those places for long weekend trips; that amount of time would drive me bonkers.

There are many *river cruises* in Europe, ranging from *expensive everything you can think of* included on super comfortable ships, to *bare minimum* on a small boat.
There are two in France (I have been on), one on the River Seine, and one on the Loire River.
Then there is (was ?) the one in Sweden, that goes from the south all the way to Stockholm.
I agree with some of the posters, that unless you are NOT the type of laying around lazy just looking at the scenery going by, a river cruise is not for you.
I do like the small boat type going thru umpteen locks, but can not imagine a cruise on a large cruise ship on the Ocean ...
Too many bodies around me to feel comfortable. Now that would drive ME also *bonkers* ...
