I'm planning on taking a cruise in April. I have the choice of either going to the Bahamas (Freeport & Nassau) or Western Caribbean (Key West & Cozumel). I have never been on a cruise before and have never been to any of these locations, except for Key West. I have been doing research online about each location, but I just can't decide which cruise I want to take. What kind of experiences does anyone have to help me make a decision? Is one recommended over the other?

Hi! I used to work on a cruise ship.

In my view, both are pretty okay, but I would do the Western Caribbean one. I think you'll find the destinations more interesting. Have you researched the quality of the food and other amenities the ship has to offer? You know, some are quite luxurious and glamorous, with gorgeous spas, cuisine like 4 star restaurants and excellent service, will others are more like gigantic floating budget motels with zillions of little kids running around and fast food quality meals.

I worked for the British line Cunard, and we tried to maintain a very high level of accommodation, service, entertainment, comfort, and especially cuisine.

Definitely take the Western Caribbean option.

Thank you for the feedback. I am leaning toward the Western Caribbean trip. I have heard that Nassau leaves something to be desired, and have heard reports of it being a higher crime destination. Again, I'm a novice, so learning as I go! I've already been to Key West, but I guess I wouldn't mind going again! What about Cozumel? I speak very little Spanish. I'm assuming since it's a tourist spot, English speakers won't be hard to find?

Cozumel is a total tourist destination. You'll be fine.

If you want to research cruises until your brain can't hold any more information, I'd suggest the forums over at cruisecritic.com You can get recommendations on excursions and find other people who will be on your same ship.

I took a Western Caribbean cruise about 2 years ago and it was amazingly amazing.

We went to Key West, Cozumel, Belize, and left out of Ft. Lauderdale. Key West was by far my most favorite stop! I took a bus tour of Belize and it was so fascinating!

Freeport and Nassau aren't really "Caribbean"....and there's not alot there. If those are your choices, go western. If you ever get a chance to go to some of the eastern Carib. islands, do that...fabulous!
