Has anyone been on a river cruise?
I am mostly interested in Europe, but any experience is fine.

It looks like you spend more time at the ports than on the big ships, and there is less entertainment, but I suppose there are also fewer children.

I haven't but I'd like to. A friend has done a couple, the last one to St Petersburg. It tends to be a more mature (in both senses of the meaning) group.

Whet your appetite by looking at this;

There are do-it-yourself barges, too.

My husband and I were kind of interested in that.
But it's pricey.

We've done three RC's so far; Russia (Moscow to St. Petersburg) & two in Europe (Rhine/Main/Danube & Mosel/Rhine). We just booked another one of 28 days in 2012 from Amsterdam to the Black Sea. RCing has become our most favored mode of travel.

It is really a great way to travel. It is by far the least stressful way to visit a foreign country. You can break off from the cruise and use a car or train and then catch up with the ship down river if you are so inclined. I highly recommend it.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have but there may be a slight delay in my response. We leave later this morning for our Italian land trip and won't be back until the 20th. Internet access may be sketchy where we are going and I'm incompetent typing on the IPad we're taking.

In the mean time, Google Grand Circle Travel and its subsidiary, Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), GCT is a US company focused on the American mature/retiree market that we use and have been repeatedly delighted with their service.

There are other RC providers but we've no experience with them. We also use GCT exclusively for our land touring and small ship (non-river - Greek Island type tours). They have a huge selection of RCs, small ship adventures and land tour offerings we are working our way through. My DW is doing their OATs Nepal/Tibet/Bhutan tour in December.

Traveling is an absolute blast!

Safe travels.

I think these are the nicest I have seen, stopping at so many ports. I sent for the brochure. Thanks.

At the risk of sounding like a commercial (it's NOT), We traveled 10 times with GCT/OAT including 6 river trips. They do cater to a "mature" but vibrant section of our population. The trips are so well paced that while you visit a lot of places, the program directors are so knowlegable, that you rarely tire. The food is very good, but the nightly entertainment is merely adequate. River cruises can never compare to ocean cruise in luxury.The important difference is that ocean cruises stress the beauty of the ship while river cruises stress the destinations.
