Lots of folks use them, although I find "sneaking" booze onboard to be more trouble than it's worth. I don't particularly want to sit in my cabin to drink.....I'd much rather be out and about at a bar, with other folks having fun! There's the issue of "mixers", too....I don't want to put my alcohol into Gatorade or Crystal Lite....or something like that!

They sell 8oz mini flasks to carry around on board, as well.
have used these in the past and highly recommend them, its nice to have the option to have a coctail in your cabin getting ready for dinner, relaxing on the balcony or any other time that suits your fancy.
we have found that Princess has the most relaxed policy regarding bringing booze on board and have never had a problem either upon initial boarding or bringing back something from a port o' call. their official policy allows for 2 bottles of wine pp but last cruise I checked in a case of beer in a rubber-maid tote with soda and mixers on top...no problemo. the rum runners were distributed amongst our other checked bags and the only reason i used those was more out of concern for breakage then detection.
they did however detect my leatherman and coffee pot and came to our cabin and asked to see them. they let me keep the leatherman but wanted the coffee pot and settled for the cord which was waiting for me on the "table of shame" upon end of cruise.
fwiw, I have heard that NCL goes to great lengths at confiscating booze but I seriously doubt they could detect a rum-runner.
Ah..my run runners. I've used mine many times and have had no problems.
That being said, my friends got busted with theirs on Monday. I've been told that the cruiselines check closer on holiday and spring break cruises.
I usually put one 32oz in each suitcase...mine and dh's. I also put the 8oz ones in the carryons. Put them in the middle of the clothing. I'm a bit paranoid about leakage I wrap them in a towel and a big ziplock. No leaks yet but, I'm not willing to take a change. I have a friend that puts the 8oz ones in a clinique makeup bag.
I've never just sat and drank in the room. I usually bring my thermal cups with us just for this reason. They have lids and staws. They take up little room and I've never been questioned about them.
They do work well; I think most people put them in their luggage, I wouldn't try putting them in my carry on stuff. Now, do I use them? Nope, I understand people wanting to have a drink in the cabin in the afternoon or late in the evening; I just have a problem with breaking the rules...I know, I am being a wuss, but that is me.

I hear you......I'm kinda the same way but damn if I'm gonna run up a sky high bill on those weak ass drinks
That's why I like these new "all you can drink" opt in's some lines are offering! Bottoms up!
If you drink wine I'd suggest getting a boxed wine. I carefully take apart the box and bring it in my luggage.
The wine in the plastic blatter gets bagged in a ziplock. Once onboard in my cabin I reassemble the box and wine.
Lase cruise I brought a box of red and a box of white. We enjoyed some quality time on the balcony. Waiting for the bride to get ready was a pleasure - literally!

and that is always our delima. We used to be fine with just ordering a bar set up in our cabin which gave us our booze for cabin use; of course when we are in public we do buy drinks. Now, the cost of bar set ups have gotten so high, they almost invite us to smuggle. I do, usually bring a few bottles of wine on board and pay the $15 cockage fee.. Some lines are now charging $20.00. The drink package is pricey unless you really drink a lot. Normally, we find a way to get a couple of bottles of wine free; either cause we are frequent guests on a particular line or some other way. Then we take advantage of the 2 for 1 drinks before dinner, etc. This way we do keep the bar bill down somewhat..
