As I get older and now that I am a solo traveler, the ship is important because of the single supplement. The only line that has cabins specifically for solo travelers is NCL. Hopefully, the other mass market lines will follow soon as they design new ships. The only draw back to a solo cabin is that none have balconies which I love but I guess you can't have everything. So I will go with the money savings.
The itinerary is very important. My interest is long cruises of 10+ days with many sea days. The sea days are very relaxing without the running around so to speak of port days.
Note that RCCL will be adding two new ships with solo cabins.
our last cruise there were 7 ships in port in St Maarten, that is totally off the top for us. I will say, it is harder and harder to find new ports. Hubby and I were just talking about that this morning. We are trying to plan something for the fall season. Our problem is new ports without doing to Europe. We can't do that anymore...darn blood clots in his leg!! No more long flights, damn it!!! We are looking at New England and Canada. We have done it before but these are some ports we haven't done. The biggest problem, flying in the day before: into Boston and spending one night is 1/2 as expensive as the whole 7 day cruise or almost.
BTW, we took our first cruise in 1982 also I think and yes, we saw maybe, one other ship.
Why not cruise over on Cunard, visit Europe by train or take a different cruise, and then return back to the US on Cunard again?

Good idea, but there are a couple of problems with that: one; it is called budget and 2-I really have no desire to cruise Cunard. The more formal upscale lines are something in our past. Today, it is casual all the way and certainly, my experience tells me Cunard is anything but casual. It is a wonderful line for the right person.
Or save hundreds or thousands of dollars and do a transatlantic that isn't Cunard.
One problem with that--they would have to spend months in Europe. Cunard is the only line that offers TA's year round every few weeks.
