Hi Folks - We're looking looking at taking a European river cruise (Amsterdam to Vienna) this year or possibly in the spring of 2010. I wondered what advice others who have done this might offer weather-wise as to the best month to go. I know that anything but very late August is not good since the Europeans tend to bail out for their vacations in that month and many places shut down. I am also concerned about low water levels so the trip doesn't turn into a bus tour. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think Amsterdam to Vienna is too long. Look at Passau Germany to Vienna, this is a Danube cruise which we loved. Includes Budapest, Bratislava (Slovakia) and a lot of scenic towns.
Check out Peter Deilmann. German-owned, pricey, but top-notch.
Don't do this in high summer, tariffs are high, and it can be hot & the cities overrun with tourists.
So shoulder season is best.

Thanks for the advice. We're generally shoulder travelers and are looking at Sept or Oct. this year. The trip we've been looking at is 14 days on the ship, not too long based on our other "away" experiences. I appreciate the recommendation re: Dellmann, will check it out, appreciate the tip. If you are interested in Costa Rica, give a shout. We spend a month or two there every year during the winter and have some good contacts with the ex-pat community. Thanks again for your response.
