Hi there - going on a family Disney cruise to the carribbean and it is the first time on the cruise. Any advice on cruising in general? Disney cruising in particular? Would love to hear your thoughts . . . . .thanks.
I have been on 3 Carnival ones to Freeport and Nassau. It is so relaxing to find a quiet spot on deck and close your eyes to the sounds of the ship cruising the ocean. Check and see if there will be a full moon one night. Nothing like seeing it out in the ocean. Just go with an open mind and fun attitude. The beaches and water are gorgeous. Bring lots of summer casual attire and sunscreen. Plus a camera with many memory cards, you will take a ton of pictures. It will be an experience like no land based vacation. You will have the time of your life !
Sign up, find Disney (you can find the specific cruise you're going on), and start reading! Tons of information and great advice there. I use it for our cruises.
Check out the Roll Call area and see if there is a Roll Call for your cruise (it can be somewhat difficult to find sometimes, so be tenacious and bookmark it when you find it). This is where people who are going on the same cruise post and often set up a meet-and-greet at the beginning of the cruise.
If you can't find a Roll Call thread, start one!
If you are going to spend time in the water take some Kodak one time waterproof cameras. You can find them at Target, Walgreens, etc.I put a label on the bottom with our name, address, ship, and cabin number on the bottom and cover it with shipping tape to protect it. If we lose it there's a chance we'll get it back.

What ship are you going on and what is your itinerary(eastern or western carribbean)?
I just got back from the western carribbean on the Disney Magic last week and can give you specifics on this ship and itinerary.
Thanks to all of you for your info. Unfortunatley, I do not know what I was thinking when I said carribien - it should have been the Bahamas. Ooops So is it worth getting off at the Bahamas or should I just relax on the boat?
Tek_Freek - I did check out the forum site. Pretty interesting stuff. For instance, a few people were complaining about just coming back from a cruise on the same boat that I will be on (Disney Wonder) and geting sick, etc. A little scary to say the least.

The waters of the Bahamas are great! Some of the best beaches in the world. I imagine your ship is going to Nassau and Disney Private island? In Nassau there are some decent beaches and there is Downtown Nassau I would reccomend doing one of the two not both. Downtown Nassau is nothing amazing but it can be a relaxing 1-2 hours of shopping. Disney Private Island I am sure has great beaches as all the Bahamas does so get off the ship there at least for a few hours and enjoy the water! It is Crystal Clear!

Every ship stops at their private island Castaway Cay. Very relaxing- alot of water activities. As far as the ship I was on the Magic so can't give you specifics about the Wonder.
Something to consider is if a shore excursion is offered to Atlantis it is well worth it from what I've been told. Great hotel with aquariums, pools, water slide etc for both kids and adults. Heard this from someone who stayed at Atlantis and met several people enjoying all the same amenities but on excursions from cruise ships rather than payinfg several hundred dollars a day as they were to stay there.

I have heard of this also. I would imagine it is pretty expensive as Atlantis is expensive but the slides, pools and beach at Atlantis are very cool and very fun the kids will love it. They also have some great fish tanks with everything from Giant Mantarays to Sharks. I have been to Atlantis many times over 10 and watching the fish never gets old amazing creatures.
Just a quick update on my trip. Thanks to everyone who posted some advice, etc.
The trip went without a hitch - no one got sick. However, it was my first cruise, and I have to admit - I was not that impressed. I was really looking forward to great food and it was okay. Granted, I was with family so we did not do many activities, but the trip just was okay. I am not sure I would go on another cruise. I think I like the freedom of having a car and staying in a hotel.
