That shows you how much I know.

Prince Consort sounds so .... dirty, they ought to use another title.

True, true...though not every member of the Queen's family has enjoyed such longevity. Remember, her father died relatively young and Princess Margaret is long-dead. I think Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother died within a year of each other, right?

Here's how succession breaks down, basically.

The Queen's children are Anne, Charles, Andrew, and Edward. Anne was born first so was first in line, but as her brothers were born it pushed her further down the list. All of the Queen's male children are ahead of her daughter.

Charles's children come ahead of Andrew, and Andrew's children come ahead of Edward. Edward's children come ahead of Anne's children.

Here's the current list:

Prince Charles (son of Elizabeth II)
Prince William (son of Charles)
Prince George (son of William)
Prince Harry (son of Charles)
Prince Andrew (son of Elizabeth II)
Princess Beatrice (daughter of Andrew)
Princess Eugenie (daughter of Andrew)
Prince Edward (son of Elizabeth II)
Viscount Severn (son of Edward)
Lady Louise (daughter of Edward)
Anne (Princess Royal) (daughter of Elizabeth II)
Peter Phillips (son of Anne)
Zara Phillips (daughter of Anne)

Does this succession rule apply to other countries (France, Spain, etc) as well?

It makes perfect sense that Charles' sons are ahead of Liz's other sons:

She's probably pretty safe, as long as she doesn't go to any baseball games where Reggie Jackson can take a shot at her.

It has nothing to do with a king "outranking" a queen. It's simply because Philip is not king directly. All this past talk about Diana being queen and present talk about Kate being queen is nonsense, too, for the same reason. Kate may one day only be queen consort.

As far as the newest arrival, consider how long Charles has been waiting to ascend to the throne. The world may be in for a very long wait.

That's true, but at the same time a King's wife has the title of Queen. QEII's mother was crowned as Queen of England and she was not referred to as Elizabeth, Princess Consort in the way that Prince Philip is.

Actually, Charles is the first-born child - Anne is two years younger.

There's no king in France... Been a very long time since there was one!
I guess it's the same thing in most countries that have a royal family.

If William becomes king, Kate will be the Queen consort. That's a hard-boiled fact. There are two types of queens....queen regnants, who like Elizabeth II are queens in their own right, and queen consorts, wives of reigning kings.

There is gender asymmetry when it comes to spouses of queens vs spouses of kings. This is due to male primogeniture. This is why a king's wife is a "queen consort" but a queen regnant's husband is not a "king consort", at least in the UK. For now.

Yes, you're right; my mistake. No matter when she was born, though, she is pushed down the list in favor of her male siblings.
