nuke waste dump in Hannaford, Washington! Yet another major contaminated area of the country that continues to cause health issues for the area. It may never be cleaned up well enough and returned to a safe area.

It appears that no matter how well they thought they cleaned up the area even today there is enough chemicals that cause issues and health problems for those who live in the nearby neighborhoods after it was determined to be safe enough to live near.
Quote:
Reynolds and others say danger continues to brew beyond the 70-acre fenced-in containment area, pointing to the discovery of chemicals during a 2011 sewer excavation project. According to the lawsuits, crews worsened the contamination by using high-powered hoses to flush the chemicals through the streets and storm drains.
Apparently the original cleanup of the canal and the nearby area wasn’t enough and is still causing problems today after all these years.

It is like the Gowanus Canal here in Brooklyn, and the developers want to build luxury condos along the waters edge once the site gets cleaned up.

I felt sorry for the first set of owners, not the second. Apparantely they did not do thier homework.

It's been a long time since I read about the Love Canal pollution, and I assumed it was a done deal, long ago!
People moved back into parts of the neighborhood after the remediation because the homes were so cheap.

People with limited economic or low resources shouldn’t have to be a victim of a troubled area. Obliviously some department said these homes and the areas was safe to live in and were wrong with their assessment.

I agree nobody should have ever lived in this area. Don't blame the companies though, this one is on the local government in New York. Read this article from '81, it has some good information

Also, your comparison between these chloralkali and VCM wastes with fracking is ludicrous. I have worked in the chemical and oil & gas industries for a long time and am well aware of the "chemicals" used in the fracking process of several major companies.

Personally, I would be much more concerned with the government's carelessness.

Today Fracking simply injects chemicals into the earth in an effort to extract gas or oil. While doing so the chemicals remain underground polluting the water tables that are used by the nearby communities for drinking and irrigating their crops. Chemicals that are not disclosed to the public before or after drilling find their way into our daily lives.

The “poster boy” of the Love Canal appears to have continued today in the fracking industry in many parts of our country. It makes you wonder if we have ever learned anything from Hooker Chemical and the Love Canal after all these years.
I think we're all doomed now anyways thanks to the fukushima meltdown, and the 300,000 tons of radioactive water spewing into the ocean daily.....You're right, I wish it wasn't true...but we really haven't learned through the years...it may be too late.
