Recently the theater partnered with the 2-story restaurant next door to show some movies with dinner and alcoholic drinks, for the over-21 crowd. In addition, the owner is a real film buff and brings in classic films, too. So I really enjoy our little local theater. Big cineplexes, no way. I'd just rent or stream at home.
I grew up in the 70s, when art film was a biiigg thing. My campus had low cost flicks on Friday nights, and brought in European, Indie, Golden Age. film noir and other genres that do not cut it in the sound bite culture. I WANNA GO BAAACK, lol! Thanks for the info - I had no idea these venues still existed.

Thanks for posting. Gives me hope.

I get a little more nervous when the theater is nearly empty because some people take that as license to blab through the whole film.

Brawls in movie theaters, "more common" these days?

I just went to a theater last weekend and saw the Mandela biopic. Wouldn't have missed it for the world! And about half the theaters in my town are indy-film-type venues, art film -type things, which don't draw a brawl-prone crowd. It pays to have eclectic tastes.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Speaking of empty, I went to an IMAX 3d viewing of a movie and was the only person in the theater. NEVER EVER will I do that again, I think that worse than a full booking.

As long as I stay close to my neighborhood, I rarely get a full theater except maybe opening night. But then again, I mostly attend matinees.

Your chances of being shot in a movie theater is far less than being killed in an auto accident.
One happens every day around the world on a frequent basis whereas the other doesn't. Do the math.
You do the math. Some of us prefer to stay away from the general public unless absolutely necessary.

I don't usually go to the movies. I can nap at home for free, and I have a tendency to fall asleep at the movies. Too expensive too, and in Texas too freaking COLD!

I don't usually go to more than a few movies a year, and usually the ones where I think the theater experience will make a difference. We just saw The Hobbit the other day, for example.

Our local theater is small, and tickets before 4PM are $6. I bring drinks and snacks in my purse...theater prices are insane for those.

The last time I sprang for the full price IMAX thing was the final Harry Potter film. We went to a midnight showing and a lot of people were in costume..lots of fun.

What a horrible way to live - I am sorry, but this strikes me sad to miss out on so very many things out of fear.

Yes.

I have a 50" Plasma with access to every streaming program available, a high quality Sony sound bar, a high quality Blue Ray player and fast internet speed.

There is no longer any reason to go to a theater.
