Ugh, makes me mad. Heroin, really? After 23 years sobriety? Ugh. Such a talented person, such a waste. When will they learn? Stay away from drugs people!
I agree, GoldyViolet. I don't know why anyone thinks they can beat Heroin.
Addiction is a medical condition. I read he'd been in Heroin Addiction treatment for about a month, sometime the last three months.
I also read he had a partner with whom he'd had three children. I wonder where they were....I don't know any Rehab program that sends someone out into the real world and encourage them to be alone!!!
I can only hope someone will hear this story and not end his/her life because of his demise.

Yes, you are exactly right. Many people don't understand this. Non-addicts can't quite comprehend it because their physiological makeup/wiring/biology is different.
If anything ends up being the demise of our civilization it will be drugs. They infect us in so many ways, crime, death, and the cost of enforcement. How many great, talented people have died from them, like Chris Farley, John Bellusi, Amy Winehouse, etc, etc, etc.
I just listened to a program on NPR about a new super powerful heroine that is killing people and addicts are actually seeking out this drug, even though they know it kills some people, because it gives them such a high ! Amazing !
Sorry to see one more talented person die needlessly.
So sad. And rage-inducing at the same time. The way I see it, it's another otherwise smart, talented person who was a dumb ass who thought he could handle drugs.
There are so many artists who are so tormented that drug abuse turns out to be self medicating. LIke any other disease - it is sad to see someone sucuumb after fighting their demons - prominent personality or man on the street.
You have ****ing everything. Seriously? You are so smart that you win an Oscar but you are so stupid that you OD.
No empathy from me.
It makes me angry when so many have so much yet it isn't enough.
The same thing that gives them the ability to allow us to suspend disbelief and enjoy their work - is often the same thing that haunts them and makes their lives miserable. Dont judge.
He joins Kurt Cobain and Versace as people I never heard of until they were dead.
Even his more mainstream performances were memorable. I will remember him in Capote, Boogie Nights, The Master, Catching Fire. I do recall there being something troubling about him in the Master, but attributed it to the disturbing nature of the character. It always stayed on my mind though. Even without knowing his history - I was not surprised by the news.

Apologies, but the "tortured artist" thing is such a ****. Actors make a living playing grown up make-believe (and in PHS's case he was remunerated well). I'm not saying that, like most people, he didn't have his inner demons but he, no doubt, had more money and connections than most to reach out and get help...........and the three most important reasons to do so......his children. Who knows what this will do to them.
I say this as someone who put up with a druggie for years.
