That's what they said about having them locked away for life in Institutions, so they opened the doors and turned them loose.

Even the mentally ill have rights that prevent them from being locked away.

It's a hard issue.

It was also criminal to have them living in hell hole institutions (like the one in Athens, Ohio) and be treated despicably by staff.

It was the easiest and cheapest thing to let people go as more of the burden for the patients care was shifted to the states. And rosy-cheeked Reagan, a pathetic actor and even worse president, had no empathy or understanding for those in need. I swear I could see the wires moving his mouth when he spoke on TV. Without a script it was always a motion to his ear as he acted as if he couldn't hear the questions.

Women inmates are the group that's seeing the greatest increase. Here's one article that speaks of the trends and reasons behind them.

Murders are half what they were back in the 80's.

Could this be a large reason why ?

How many are Illegals ?

How much has our population increased and Could this be a smaller % than 20 years ago ?
For Chrissakes, with the insane amount of money we're spending on policing and prison costs ($50k a year to house an inmate, both direct and indirect costs) the murder rate had better be falling or there's something really, really wrong in Denmark!!!

Good points.

The streets are much much safer than they were in the 70s when murderers and rapists went through revolving doors of prisons and were quickly out and back to raping and murdering.

It's a myth that most prisoners are there merely for smoking some pot. Most are there because they hurt people and need to be in prison.

Most Americans don't live "on the streets" = Downtown

Crime has now flooded into suburbia. People can no longer hide in their precious gated communities

Closing of housing projects and the spread of Sec 8 housing has dispersed much of the old central crime areas.

If our population is up 10% and prison population is only up 2.6% doesn't that mean fewer people % wise are jailed ?

If we emptied all the Illegals in Jail what would the percent drop to ?
