You know, on the face of it this story sounds silly. But if you've ever gotten chili juice in your eyes, you know how painful that can be. And these people initially did not know the cause of the irritation. Habanero peppers are pretty hot, too. In food prep, you are warned to wear gloves while preparing them.
Another thing - people in the comments are scoffing at the "decontamination" of the children, but they are not using that gelid thing inside their cranial vaults. Think about it; peppers are all over the playground. Little kids don't just walk and run in playgrounds. They roll, they sit, they throw balls (which hit the ground), and they put their hands all over their faces. So they get habanero juice in their eyes, noses, and mouths.
Think pepper spray, people. Same idea. It would hurt like a... well, you know. I must say, it was a creative way to incite chaos. I'm glad the authorities isolated the cause quickly, so life can get back to normal around here.
Stop and consider the number of incidents of school violence the south Denver metro has dealt with over the past fifteen or so years. There's a reason we're primed to respond this way. Fortunately, as these things go, it turned out to be a pretty minor incident. I'm just grateful and not inclined to question how it was handled.

No one knew what caused the students to react the way that they did when it was happening. It was not until later when the school discovered that the problem was due to chili peppers. I think the school reacted appropriately considering they had no idea at all what they were dealing with.
