Hello, I am not sure if this is the right category, but we do know that drug abuse, and the crimes that go along with it, have spread to previously "pristine" parts of the nation, such as Vermont, where years ago this problem was virtually unheard of.
I have known a few people who worked in the legal end of the government and one in the health end, all with regard to combating drug use and selling.
Now, I do know about the incredibly destructive nature of meth and heroin use, as well as prescription pain killers.
I don't know if they ought to be in one category, or separated, re: what to do, but I just wonder if we ought to continue to use legal and law enforcement methods to combat drug abuse.
I wonder because of the money (how many billions) that we spend doing the following: tracking down drug dealers and users, confiscating guns and weapons related to the sale of guns, prosecuting and then incarcerating. What is worse? The manpower and money we spend fighting drugs or the use of drugs?
Does the war on drugs make for the spreading of drug abuse? I wonder about that.
I think that the use of these drugs is a terrible, horrible thing and know it destroys lives. But I also wonder this: Are we actually helping to spread the use of drugs by making it illegal? What if they were super cheap always and easy to obtain? Would the makers and distributors be less able to benefit financially and less wanting to bring them to Vermont, RI, etc.?
I've often pondered legalizing drugs, and spending the money on treatment rather than elimination. Take away the mystic, and bring an awareness I think would be better. When I was young they told me drugs were bad, and now I take blood pressure, and cholesterol meds. sometimes when I get up I'm light headed, and they say it's good for me?

I am not really talking about drugs which have little effect on the mood.

I understand this, and I'm looking at the global effect these drugs have vs a single individual. How many people across the world are affected by American indulgence? Are we so narrow minded not to see it's affects? Turning this institution legal and allowing Wall Street prostitutes control may have an overall benefit? The weak individuals who partake in these activities can seek treatment, or hide from society in their drug induced shame. Cost will be lower, so crime will drop. I honestly believe habitual use numbers would be reduced. Inner city thuggery would drop as the illicit allure is taken away. A majority are already mentally ill, and these billions could be properly redirected as a solution rather than adding to the cause.

Whose money would you spend on the treatment? I don't think taxpayers should have to pay a dime -- let the drug addicts pay for their own treatment.
I would say legalize drugs in prisons -- let the prisoners have unlimited supplies of the drugs of their choice. All welfare handouts of every kind should be ended to those choosing to use drugs --- no SSI, no food stamps, no Medicaid.
As long as taxpayers are having to foot the bill, then no to legalization.
