Hell no. I think our armed forces are extraordinary. Why pollute such a professional fighting force with scum?

People keep proposing that without taking even a first look at the numbers involved.

There are 1,500,000 kids that turn 18 years old in the US every year. A new agency set up to train, feed, uniform, and house them for any length of time would be gargantuan, second in size only to the DoD itself. And there wouldn't be anything useful gained out of them during that time.

No. Soldiers have to be psychologically stable and work according to laws and discipline in war zones. Violent criminals would not be good soldiers. If they cannot function properly in civilian society then there is no reason to believe they would in a life threatening one.

Did you by any chance read those Sven Hessel potboilers about Penal Battalion 666?

Unless you plan on only sending them on suicide missions, I see this plan backfiring.

Horrible idea! The military doesn't need a bunch of sociopaths and hardened criminals running around with rifles. Today's military is technologically advanced. This isn't the Civil War. Discipline and character are important. It's bad enough there are so many gang members enlisting today in order to receive combat arms training to take back on to the street. The military doesn't need convicts and felons who can't take orders or follow basic protocol.

oh boy. You might want to rethink that plan. Or... go visit a prison, and then see if that still sounds like a good idea.

That's basically what the French Foreign Legion is.

Awful Idea IMO. The last thing we need is people who are already rebelling against society having guns and ammo in their hands. this would be a disaster!!

Lets try to stay out of going to war as not to need a draft. If we were at war, I would like to see the troops rotated out more. Only those that wish to do more tours could, but not be forced.

This is where I would favor a draft. Have everyone contribute to the effort.

Used to be, a long time ago. No longer. The French Foreign Legion now runs background checks and refuses hardcore criminals. Someone running from alimony, maybe; a convicted bank robber, no.
