This is why teachers need unions to protect them from unfair management practices. Had this person been represented the result would have been much different.
Do what the US has done at the border for years: hire only ex-Navy and military special forces and change the name from Detroit Education "Achievement" Authority to "I'll bet I'll own your butt before you own mine" Authority.
I have to wonder about a teacher who commands no respect in the classroom; she might as well have been a wall or a chair to those kids.
I'm not surprised, though, as it's probably the same atmosphere those kids encounter at home, where there's a posse of female relatives who, themselves, command no respect--and no male authority figure.

I realize this, but they think about liability, and it's much easier to terminate than deal with the issue. A union would have provided due process that would have given the individual a chance. Ask any teacher why they like the union, and representation in liability will be the answer. We surely know it's not great wages!

Back in my day the teachers broom would have been the least of my worries when my parents found out but alas that's not true today.
Sounds about right. There was the news story about how inside a school bus, 3 boys wailed on one boy. The bus driver got criticized by the internet for not doing enough, but he did call for help. Supporters say the guy was in his late 50s, early 60s? He was old enough that physical involvement was NOT the way to go, so not jumping in was the smarter thing to do.

This is not a today vs yesterday thing.
A friend of mine was fired 20 years ago for "laying a hand on a kid" - the kid she grabbed a knife away from when he jumped up and threatened another classmate with it. Teenage boy.

I dunno about you, but it was my mom who would wail on us and my dad who would coddle.
And neither of us would EVER dream of saying Boo to a teacher because both parents would have brought the hammer down at that point.
