There is definitely a shortage of women in India, the problem stems from past cultural problems meets head-on with Western feminism.

In China, there's a huge disproportionate male to female ratio yet you don't see that many rapes because culturally the Chinese respect female rights.
Statistics, reality, and perception(which to a large degree are shaped by the media and individuals' prejudices/stereotypes) often don't agree.

I agree that there are problems in India, it's a developing country and there are bound to be issues. India still has a large illiterate population which is it's bane. However, the good thing about India is that unlike some other parts of the world (China, parts of the Middle East etc.) India has a free press and freedom of expression. This goes a long way towards changing attitudes and providing equal protections to all.

If you think women are treated bad in India you should really go to the Middle East LOL! I've lived in India and in the cities I saw nothing but respect for women by most of the educated class. I've also spent a considerable time in the Middle East and over there women are basically treated as objects even by the educated class...infact it is the law of the land in places like Saudi Arabia, women can't drive, can't even go out in public with another man that is not her father or husband.

In Iran if a woman is raped it is her fault and she is put in prison, stoned or lashed. Makes India look like a paradise for women, so it's all relative. If you look at India's politics, there are many many women holding very senior positions. In the 80s India's prime minister was a woman (Indira Gandhi). The leader of a major party in India is a woman - Sonia Gandhi. If you go to India you will see that women hold very high positions in all spheres of society and in many cases out-earn their male counterparts.

My point is that yes, India has problems, but a lot of places do (including the United States, to a much lesser extent of course) and there are a large number of countries far far worse than India in this regard.

This kind of incident may explain why so many are leaving India for the USA.

Who could blame them?

While its unfortunate some girls get raped in India maybe we should address our own problems with the issue before getting into the rape issue in other countries.

^^^I think people either blind themselves to the rampant violence that goes on every single day in this country or they simply sweep it under the rug because they think this country is too perfect to have the amount of crime that we have here. Talk about sticking your head in the sand!

We have enough violence, rape and crime in the US. I think WE should be on the list ahead of India. We can't save the entire world you know. We shouldn't be world police either. We should be educating our kids, instead of making them have over $100K debt after they get through with college. Sometimes we need to take care of our own.

While it is abhorrent what happened to those girls, there are plenty of horror stories that happen right here in the USA. Let India handle its own problems, and the US handle theirs. We have no right to feel superior to other countries until we get to the point where we don't hear about the rapes, murders, abuse and other deviant behaviors that happens in our own country every day.

Agree that we should not think to be the world's policemen and as bad as these things are, my support is not to trying to tell them how to fix their own country.

And how do you suppose we "reckon with" them?

Do we invade, cut off trade, immigration? Or do we let them run their country and we run ours?
