A 73-year-old Vietnam veteran paid a high price for a free muffin.
Joe Koblenzer says he was fired by a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Florida after he gave a needy person a corn muffin for free, WWSB reported.
Koblenzer, who had been with the eatery in Sarasota for three years, told the station that he was previously written up twice before the muffin infraction: once for having a fountain drink while on duty, and another time for allegedly giving a woman a free cup of coffee. In the latter instance, Koblenzer says the customer paid for the coffee.
The media is trying to spend this story anyway they want to, but this man is just plain wrong. He even admitted it. I don't care what company you work for, if you violate their rules 5 times, you deserve to be fired. The fact that he is a veteran is completely irrelevant. That doesn't allow him to do what he wants.
That's the world today. A lowly employee isn't supposed to give anything away even if they bought it. Giant corporations have no room for that. OTOH word of freebies can get around quickly for the not-really-needy.

No where does it say this vet paid for the muffin.
Easy to be generous when it isn't coming out of his pocket.
The employee actually stole the muffin if he gave it away w/o paying for it and thieves should be fired !
Lets switch this up a bit. What if instead of it being an employee, it was a customer. I wonder if people would feel the same way.
A customer, who is a 73 year old veteran, walks into a Cracker Barrel. He decides to take a muffin from the kitchen, walk out of the store and gives it to a homeless individual. Should anything happen to the customer?
I think because he was an employee, he got off light by just being fired. It was theft and he could have been arrested.
You have to wonder how many muffins or other kind of food Cracker Barrel throws away daily for being out too long/too old, etc. And is whatever profit CB gets from a lousy muffin worth the bad publicity they're getting for taking a hard line and firing a kindly (yet possibly misguided) employee

If he had done it 5x already, and been told to stop, he probably would have been charged with shoplifting.

I believe CB works thru Second Harvest for the Day Old bake goods.
Many restaurants give the Un-Served / Day Old food to "Food" re-distributional ( Second Harvest) type operations. The "Homeless" get the food, Restaurants don't want to have homeless hanging round there place at the end of the night to get the Day/old's for safely, security reasons.
