When I was a kid I thought that the word KODAK was an Asian word and wondered why an American company would call it self KODAK. It is a word that George Eastman invented just because he liked the letter K. Still when I was a kid I thought it sounded Asian to me. LOL

Amazon was chosen because its not just bigger than the next biggest river its several orders of magnitude bigger.

Bezos originally wanted to call it makeitso.com because he is a Captian Piccard fan and he also toyed relentless.com, if you go to relentless.com it will take you to amazon.

She struggled with it, and had to pronounced it very slowly syllable by syllable to get the "L" correctly. BTW, she speaks Mandarin. Apparently, some Chinese people do have problems pronouncing the "L" in the middle of a word. She has been over here about 10 years now.

I don't believe this for a second. Fact is that for some odd reason the 40 thieves tale is famous in China and "Alibaba" is more popular than Jesus. A typical Chinese person who is born in China would have been familiar with that name since grade school and could say that name just out of reflex. In fact, your friend would have blurred out Alibaba in Mandarin.

Why is there an Amazon.cn in China?

Personally I'd rather give my business to amazon or alibaba than walmart.

A more accurate joke would be that they (we) cannot pronounce our own flied lice. So again, the R is the issue, if you only spoke chinese at first.

Only if you spoke Cantonese, which lacks the R sound but has the L sound. Mandarin has both R and L.

But since Alibaba has no R, this is a moot point.
