"Three Afghanistan National Army officers were reported missing from an international military training exercise at Camp Edwards on Cape Cod after they disappeared without explanation."
I heard this on NPR this morning. They spoke to a guy who said where they were, it was strictly classroom study. No weapons, nothing like that. They were last seen at a mall. They're not considered dangerous. I wouldn't worry about it.
Imagine living in a hellhole country, then by some stroke of fate getting a chance to visit a prosperous, safe, clean country. I too would take whatever chance I had to to not go back.
I too heard they were found at the border trying to cross but why?
Were they trying to defect?
or were they trying to get to a terrorist group training center?
It all sounds suspicious and pretty scary. As careful as the military was in vetting these 3 guys out and giving them the OK to travel here guess what you never know. There have been many cases where supposed friends turned their guns on our troops.
This time it turned out peacefully but we need ot a lot more vigilant and I hate to say it but a lot less trustful. There is too much at stake to play nice.
Why would you automatically assume that because a person is from a particular country they are an enemy? If everyone in Afghanistan had the same point of view, they wouldn't be fighting amongst each other for so long.
Remember the cold war? Not all Russians were Soviets. Not all Chinese are communists. Plenty of people in Iran and Iraq were considered enemies of their own government and treated them accordingly. We gave them asylum.
These guys are probably defecting to avoid going back home.
Should we necessarily trust them? Maybe not, but we should not also automatically assume they are enemies of the US.
Instead of hiding under your bed, do some research. How may people have applied and received political asylum in the US in the last 100 years? And how many of those turned out to be dangerous to the US?
If I were one of the Afghan soldiers, I'd probably run as well. They're all going to die out there. They don't have the arsenal to keep up with the terrorists.
I'd run, find a job in the US or Canada and call it good.

I don't recall seeing anyone claim they were hiding under their bed

They are already out of the country. Why not defect to the US? Judging by what is happening on the southern border, deportation should be their last concern.
