'I just threw my son over the Yaquina Bay Bridge': Documents detail 6-year-old's death, mom's 911 call | OregonLive.com

Was this a tragic result of poor mental health services? Or something else?

This is just so sad all around. While in no way am I excusing the mother's guilt, she was trying to raise a child with autism while also caring for a husband with a recurrence of MS. That's a lot for even the strongest of people to handle. The family was having financial problems as a result of the MS. This mother reached out on social media for months with cries for help, detailing her struggles to care for her son. As the article states, "A Toledo police officer contacted London's father, who told officers that his boy was never left alone with other people or with a baby-sitter because "he's autistic," according to the court documents." That is a LOT for one person to handle.

That is not an excuse to murder her son. Not in the least. But I wonder if there was more support out there for parents raising children with disabilities or support for families dealing with serious illness if this couldn't have been avoided. I watch my boss struggle every day to get adequate services for her severely disabled daughter, and luckily, her family has the means to afford it thanks to inheriting a paid off house. Both parents have to work full time to pay for her therapies. I can't imagine what life would look like if either she or her husband developed a serious condition.

Autism and many other mental defects can be detected in utero by ultrasound. If this woman would have had an abortion this tragedy would never had happened.

if she couldn't deal with it any more she could have just abandoned the kid somewhere instead of killing him. For those ready to jump on me, my reasoning is Social Services would have had to done something at that point.

There's POS's in the world. There's nothing you can do to change that. Someone should throw her ass over the bridge

Autism cannot be diagnosed in utero.

Yes he does. As do many.

I blame whatever combination of factors kept her from having an abortion so that mentally ill and/or immature people are not having kids before they should.
