My wife insisted I go out with her at 3AM to a Toys R us store my first year here. I had never experienced the whole "black Friday" event before. Boxing day was the ritual.
She wasn't impressed that I wouldn't push, pull or shove and I even had the audacity to let someone cut in front of me...
That was 12 years ago, and I haven't been invited to go out since ....
I jumped off the holiday treadmill years ago. I don't travel, buy stuff or send cards (except if I run across the occasional funny e-card).
Long ago I enjoyed the bustle, but though there were crowds there wasn't the craziness with stores opening at midnight or on Thanksgiving Day, at least not that I remember.
Now I enjoy a nice Thanksgiving dinner and then horsing around putting up the Christmas decorations. I like the season and the sparkle, but I won't go near a mall till well after New Year's.
Black Friday never existed in the UK, but retailers decided to introduce it over here to make extra money. This is the first year I'm hearing of this 'Black Friday' nonsense. So, yeah - thanks a lot, America, for another import slowly degrading our society.
Yeah, sorry about that.
You guys gave us tabloids and paparazzi, so I guess we can call it even.
I went to Target on Thanksgiving for one thing. By the time the doors opened at 6 PM the line was completely wrapped around the store. I'd guess there were easily 400 people in line. Someone filmed the line as it went in. No rushing or big fights, but I did have people running into my ankles with their carts. I got what I wanted and was out before the checkout line could build. The Golden Corral across the street did have a near riot when someone tried to cut in line there, though.
Oh yeah, I live in Idaho and I didn't see a single black person so take your racism and stuff it.
It's always a PITA for people working and the shoppers themselves are usually just out to be part of a "happening". It's the same mindset that get's people out to protest things they don't actually know much about. Everyone's time is worth more than any monetary savings but some folks love crowds and excitement.
