Bodh Gaya tends to attract sexual predators. Women tourists to the holy site are easy pickings. There have been cases of Tibetan and Bhutanese monks assaulting Western women visiting the site. Don't assume any males are safe to accompany you, if you're a woman, and don't let anyone isolate you.

Every time I hear these stories, I'm amazed at how stupid I was to go there alone when I was 18. Granted, I took some precautions, like doing everything possible to blend in, wearing a wedding ring AND all the traditional Indian indicators of marriage, being cautious with transportation, and not going out at night.
Still, I'm lucky that nothing happened. Now that I'm older and wiser, I wouldn't go there again without a group of friends.
