The last Khambo Lama of Mongolia and the Buryat Republic (Russian Federation) passed away in a similar posture, while meditating. This is a tradition in the brand of Buddhism practiced in Tibet and the Mongol regions. It's said that before his death he gave orders to be disenterred some decades hence. When his instructions were followed, he was said to have been found in the same state as the monk in the article. In 2002, he was put on display to great fanfare in the main monastery in Buryatia as a sacred relic. His remarkable state of preservation was considered a miracle and an example of his spiritual attainment. However, later one of the monks confessed to the fact that the body had regularly been given special salt and herb treatments to conserve its condition.

In this recent case, the monk was found in a cave in the meditation posture. We don't know yet if he had been secretly given similar treatments to preserve his condition, or if it was simply the dry desert air in Mongolia that preserved him

Supposed miracles like this are used to inspire the public and to deepen the faith of Buddhist practitioners. Like the visions people have of the Virgin Mary in the Catholic tradition, and the claims to miracles performed by church officials nominated for beatification.

I am going to assume by reading this ridiculous article that formal education isn't really a priority in Mongolia.
