I respect his father for his view, but I can't agree with it. We were all brainwashed that hard work is the only way you deserve to have a happy life. We shame those that don't agree with the rat race. But it is all of our dreams to win the lottery and escape it. Beating the system, like Richard Sherman has, is the biggest blessing to his family. You can't take that hard work to your grave. Enjoy a lavish life with your remaining years and make nice memories. That job won't care about you when you leave, there are a hundred others lined up at any moment to take it without the company missing a beat.
I used to be a huge proponent of hard work, until I saw how it rarely gets you anywhere (and I got laid off despite being the most productive). Being buddies with the boss will get you 10x farther with much less work. Saw it with my own eyes, and it ruined how I thought after that.

I agree with you on all points, but Richard Sherman has probably worked as hard, if not harder, than most to arrive at his current position in life.

Working has other benefits aside from pay. I work in nursing homes, and a lot of the men who can still walk and talk are bored, have no structure, would kill for a job again no matter what it is. Some people don't want to sit by a pool for the rest of their lives but want to have a purpose, structure to their lives, a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

That's because they were beat in the head with the "you have to slave away to be a respectable human being" all their lives. They were brainwashed so hard that they don't know how to simply enjoy relaxing and being carefree. They don't know of a different mindset. That's fine though if it would really make them happy. Not gonna change an elderly's mind about it lol
