Sounds like a good way to end up in a shallow grave.

No way to vent her rage? How about turning him in for posting underage porn? She's only 17. She could take him to court and have the book thrown at him. Seems like that might do the trick, rage-wise, rather than her committing a crime. That was incredibly stupid.

Many of the flippant responses here are illustrative of the gender-based double standard we culturally apply to the victims of violence.

For those who don't remember Lorena Bobbitt, who some posters have referenced, she was charged in 1993 with the malicious wounding of her husband, John. Specifically, she approached her sleeping husband with a butcher knife and completely severed his penis at the base. She then took the organ and disposed of it in a nearby field. In her police interviews, she indicated that she was angry at her husband for having sex with other women, and for being selfish (not waiting for her to reach orgasm) when he had sex with her.

Feminists rallied around Lorena Bobbitt, claiming that Bobbitt was an abused woman who was suffering from "battered woman syndrome". Bobbitt herself, claimed her act was committed in self defense of a rape--a rape for which there was found to be no factual evidence. Her attorney ultimately argued both self defense and temporary insanity as defenses. The jury found Lorena Bobbitt not guilty due to temporary insanity.

After the verdict, Lorena Bobbitt joked that she was "going to Disneyland". Four years later, she was once again charged with assault, this time for punching her mother.

The truth of the matter is that both Lorena and John Bobbitt were contentious, unstable, and untrustworthy human beings. Neither one was a particularly sympathetic figure. Their marriage, by all accounts, was constantly dysfunctional.

While it was in the headlines, the Bobbitt case was little more than fodder for comedians--in spite of the fact that it involved the victim of a horrific act of sexual violence. As is evidenced here, the case is still referenced almost exclusively as a humorous meme.

Going back to the OP in this thread, the actions of the guy in this case were despicable. It's's fine to suggest criminal and/or civil action against the man who clandestinely created and posted this video. However, equivocating his actions to an act of violence which causes profound bodily injury, is the height if insensitivity--and for anyone who has expressed even passing concern for violence directed at women, it is also profoundly hypocritical.

I see that the age of consent is 16, but will she be tried as an adult at 17? If not, what type of sentence might she be facing?

Not saying what she did was right, but that video will be online forever for all to see, including any children she might have.

I don't ever wish physical pain / injury on people, but this guy does need to be punished for what he did. I don't believe this was the right way to punish him, I think a few years behind bars would be far more appropriate. Both his and her actions are despicable.

Zero plus zero = Zero

Two losers in loserville. They should both go to jail for what they've done.

Doubtful. I understand that the age of consent is 16 in South Africa.

The article stated that the guy/victim was not going to press charges, and that may be required by South African law for prosecution. That may be the end of it.

The age of consent is 16, but it is illegal to produce or distribute pornographic material involving any individual below the age of 18.

He probably isn't going to press charges out of embarrassment. He mentioned his medical condition preventing him from prosecuting, which may be partly true, however, I think even a jury will have little sympathy for a guy who surreptitiously videotaped himself and his gf having sex, then posted it on the internet for the whole world to see. I agree she assaulted him, however, had the tape not existed, he literally wouldn't be in this position

Maybe.

She might have done it after they'd inevitably broken up. Either way, we're in the land of pure conjecture at that point which isn't productive nor is it really relevant.

It's just gender bias. If a guy reacted by pouring acid on a girl's genitals for shaming him by posting a sex tape, sleeping with another guy, whatever, nobody would be entertaining the she deserved it defense.
