It's cases like this that make my blood boil. Yeah, I want our cops to protect themselves, but this is an outrage. The cops slammed this old man face first to the ground. Two cops against one old man!

As far as crime is concerned, Indians (whether Indian-Americans or legal visitors) are as harmless as they come. Not only did these thug-cops injure an innocent person, they wasted time they could have spent policing real crimes and arresting real criminals.

The fact that the PD suspended the thug is all the proof one needs that they were in the wrong. They rarely ever do that! But suspension is not sufficient disciplinary action. I hope the victim's family gets a really good lawyer and sues the city. They will need a lot of $ just to cover the medical bills, and you can forget about the PD paying those bills.

Another reason I don't ever want to visit the Police State of America. Hey, it's not like you have rapists, drug-dealers, gangsters and psychopaths walking the streets. Why not go after a random grandpa from India, who is obviously the biggest danger!

I wouldn't say a 57 year old is "an old man", but from watching the video it appears the officers over reacted.

True, Jim. We all know that the word "grandfather" is used to illicit emotions in readers. I hate it when news medias do that. But regardless, the cops over-reacted, and as long as society defends this type of behavior, none of us is safe.

The police department has fired and arrested the cop who was involved.

An Indian Grandfather!

If it was some white guy, I'm sure the outrage would be nonexistent. They deserve it!

The problem here is the aggressiveness on the part of the LEO, as opposed to methodically working to keep the situation calm - or, to defuse it if it threatens to become intense.

In 2012, police in the United States killed 410 Americans using 'justifiable force'.

And for those who say that such tactics cannot work, ponder this:
Quote:
Last year, in total, British police officers actually fired their weapons three times. The number of people fatally shot was zero. In 2012 the figure was just one. Even after adjusting for the smaller size of Britainís population, British citizens are around 100 times less likely to be shot by a police officer than Americans. Between 2010 and 2014 the police force of one small American city, Albuquerque in New Mexico, shot and killed 23 civilians; seven times more than the number of Brits killed by all of England and Walesís 43 forces during the same period.
Armed police: Trigger happy | The Economist

And the comparative results? The UK incarcerates a smaller proportion of its population, and has lower rates of violent crime. And isn't controlling crime the entire point of the matter?

Sadly, there are some people who are more interested in making excuses for egregious behavior than in actually demanding better behavior that produces better results.

All these cases just add up to show that our "police culture" is beyond ridiculous.

"shoot/tackle/assault now, let the lawyers bail us out later." I find it almost disturbing how the same people who think they are 'true patriots' or w/e are okay with the police (in general) systematically abusing their powers and getting backed by the judicial system.

PS: 43north87west, there are racial overtones here, but you've got it backwards. When white people get shot there is an outrage. That's the only time most of the white majority cares. It is disproportionally every other group feeling the full wrath of our police system, which is why most white people are so complacent with such a ****ed up system. The police are just 'protecting' them from an often racially-charged image of 'OMG THUGS!!!'. Hence our entire history of white flight, inequality, police brutality, etc. By making such statements you are only buying into a system of segregation that says its okay when police kill people. The same people who moan about a police state being formed back up the police once they start actually murdering or paralysing unarmed civilians. It's disgusting.

I am surprised that the Indian grandfather is still alive. These overly aggressive THUGS that are supposed to serve and protect treated this man worse than a cowboy calf roping at a rodeo. Of course, they saw that his skin was not light enough so they had a license to do anything they want. Let me guess, if prosecuted, the cop will claim that his life was in danger and the pathetic jury will back him.
