Courtney Topic, 22, was said to be acting like a “zombie” before police opened fire, and apparently ignored police calls to drop her knife. She moved towards them in a zombie-like fashion and the police kept their guns on her and kept moving back. She came towards them wielding and swinging a knife. They then shot her.
This happened outside of Hungry Jack's, a few days ago in Western Sydney (not sure if it's posted here). It has sparked an outrage locally. Apparently, she was mentally ill, having Asperger's Syndrome.
FWIW - "Asperger's Syndrome" is not a mental illness but a behavioral problem characterized by the inability to understand anyone else. I was, obviously, not there but I would expect a police officer to be able to defend themselves against a knife attack by a "zombie like" person without having to kill them. Is that not what police batons (clubs) are for?
A baton is not an appropriate defense against a knife attack. A knife is lethal weapon. A crazed person or one who behaves like that is very dangerous when armed with a knife. A baton requires you engage within arms reach. If the person with the knife closes with you, you are now fighting for your life and they have a knife and you have squat. Where do these obviously flawed ideas come from?
Carry a knife and waive it around? Get shot. If she had a mental problem of any sort, then her family is to blame. Let their conscience deal with it.
