This is not only a Portland problem although it was brought to my attention by an African American friend since I used to live there. I have a cousin in the Chicago suburban area who is a security guard. The guards are instructed to do racial, age and ethnic profiling so there are certain groups of people they watch more closely.
He says that can be pretty misleading because some of the worst offenders are those who you would least expect.
These cases shown here don't appear to have any validity and I am glad the people being accused chose to fight back. If any of them were guilty, they will have a judge to decide their case and not some over jealous sales manager.

Sounds more like "shop lifting" while Black. I'm thinking that particular legal theory isn't going to go far. LOL
But you're just doing what you do best.

Your cousin works for idiots. I've been in retail a long time and I can tell you shoplifters come in all colors, ages, backgrounds, etc. We are told to look for certain behaviors, and I don't care what you look like, if you exhibit those behaviors you will be watched.

I do feel bad that the customer was mistaken for someone else and suffered humiliation. They owe her an apology
You know though, I really think people need to face reality the reason black customers are the ones they are targeting more often is not because of race so much as reputation. Black people have a bad reputation for committing these types of crimes. Get over it. Lets face it America is a society that judges people for all kinds of reasons. Right or wrong . If they decide they want to be suspicious of me for any reason who cares. I have nothing to hide let them watch me all they want to.
I remember years ago when I was a young adult about 19 or 20 walking around a very wealthy shopping area called Palm Beach very casually dressed, I was treated by some of the snobby sales people with open contempt and direct insulting rudeness . Another time I went back to that same shopping area dressed very nicely and they catered to me . Go figure.

I totally disagree.
It's one thing to be watched by security guards/cameras, or be treated in a mature and professional manner, and another thing altogether to be humiliated and treated disrespectfully for no reason at all.
If any of you read the article, you would realize that one individual was a mother shopping with her daughter, and she was refused service there based on some mysterious video/picture that the store claimed made her a 'suspect.' Store refused to show this 'evidence' to either the woman or the police officer who accompanied her to the store after she initially left the store.

No excuses.
At first I didn't read the article either then I went back and edited my post. I really think that this is also a case of bad management and bad employees . Some people should not be in sales or customer service positions.
