My opinion is that Europe has to make life so unpleasant for illegal immigrants (as does the USA) that the result is no longer worth the risk.

Oh it's very current.

Actually it's happened (capsized boats) several times over the past few days. The death toll is in the several thousand range now. Furthermore they have managed to arrest one of the captains of one of these smuggler ships. Maybe more to come.

It's being covered extensively on Sky News and other non-USA media outlets. USM MSM will have to get by hearing about where Hillary went today, news about diet pills, and Michelle Obama getting annoyed when little girl asked how old she was.

THIS x a billion!!!

I really find it sad how America/Europe has become the 2nd/3rd world's dumping ground and its citizens have to pay the price.

until recently, Italy was running a bunch of rescue ships, but it was very expensive to do and seemed to be encouraging even more people to come. they pleaded with other countries to pitch in but there were no takers.
apparently they're going to try to come anyway. I'm trying to imagine 900 people on a 70 foot boat

That's 900 fewer potential criminals. Not bad.

You don't know them to call them potential criminals! That's 900 people; you think that's 900 potential criminals? Do you believe in ethnic profiling wholesale, or just certain ethnicities?

They are potential criminals in that they are attempting to enter Italy illegally.

Aren't there some 12 million of illegal migrants in the USA?

I don't know the exact number but it is a lot.

You cannot really control illegal immigration unless you can cut off the economic benefits. That means work, access to health care and other benefits, access to accommodation, etc.. It is more complicated in the USA in that children of immigrants born here are automatically US citizens. I think most western European countries have done away with that.
