Cops Kill Man for Refusing to ID as He Dropped Off Stray Cat to Animal Shelter, Police Remain Silent
Jay Syrmopoulos | The Free Thought Project
April 22, 2015

Dothan, Ala. In late December of 2014, Robert Earl Lawrence, 30, in an act of compassion, took a stray cat to the Dothan Animal Shelter. What was a seemingly selfless act of kindness would subsequently end with Lawrence being fatally gunned down by a cop.

Almost four months after that fateful day, police have provided the public with no more answers than were given the day after the killing. They have maintained a blanket of virtual silence surrounding the incident.

As we reported previously, the staff at the shelter, rather than simply accepting the cat, proceeded to demand that Lawrence show government issued identification. Per shelter policy, they demanded Lawrence show ID, prior to being allowed to leave, according to information released by police immediately after the shooting.

Lawrence showed them a notarized legal identification in the form of an affidavit, rather than the standard Department of Motor Vehicle issued ID card. In what would prove to be a fatal move, shelter employees refused to accept his form of ID and called the police.

Immediately upon arrival, the police began to force Lawrence to show his ID, eventually attempting to arrest him. In an apparent struggle, Lawrence was fatally shot by the officer in the abdomen, according to police.

After repeatedly being told to calm down, Lawrence was advised he was being placed under arrest. A physical altercation ensued, to which Lawrence was shot in the abdomen (by an officer), Police Sgt. Maurice Eggleston told AL News.

Why would they kill an unarmed man over this? Why weren't these officers wearing body cams? As it is, all we have is the police statement. That ok with you?

BTW, this police department has been reported as harassing other citizens.....

Please.. do a little research before you post stuff from free thought project.. at least allow us to read some other stories that might have a shred of the truth in them

There was a violent confrontation of and by the suspect in this case... read about it

Man killed by Dothan cop had violent past - Dothan Eagle: Crime Court

Fight with police coupled with threats.. possibility exists of getting shot and killed.. as occurred here.. and after the investigations (note more than one ) heck yea Im ok with it.. the policeman didnt die... the violent suspect did

From the sources I have read.. looks like a good shoot.. but then again.. anything that comes form free thought project rag is immediately suspect

So dont be lazy.. dont let your agenda show.. at least try to push the button a couple of more times looking around

why is it shelter policy to see ID before you are allowed to leave?
1984 is the future.

Aren't there "safe houses" for infant children where there are 'no questions asked' if you drop off a baby? But you can't drop off an animal without identifying yourself?

An unarmed man was shot by the cops? Where are the protests? Where are the riots? Where are the calls for the cops heads? Oh, never mind. The unarmed man was white. There is no story here. White lives don't matter.

Notarized legal affidavit of ID? I'm guessing sovereign citizen?

In most states, shelters can legally require you to take back a cat that you dropped off. This is to prevent people dropping off severely ill or feral cats. If you do this, you must return to the shelter and reclaim the cat. If you don't, the cat must, by law, be immediately euthanized. That's where the ID comes in. People will drop off their neighbors cat, on purpose, in an attempt to get it euthanized. So, if you don't present ID, you must take the cat with you.

Good advice. After a while it gets exasperating seeing people post biased, one-sided stories from sites like FTP, Alternet, MediaMatters, etc. without their searching through more legit news sources.
