I had a black friend whose name was Upendo Sabree. It was a real African name that meant something on the order of loving child. I don't remember exactly. She was proud of it since her parents had traced their ancestry and felt it showed their African roots.
Another black woman I worked with named her daughter Melissa because she said she specifically did not want her child to have a "ghetto" name. The woman's name was Kim. She felt that ghetto names hurt black people when it came to getting jobs. This was back in the 70's which I think was before psychologists had begun to write about the issue.
I love the name Peaches, Porscha, Kristal, Mercedes, Maserti, Suga, Ginger for women, all gorgeous names lol
Is it bad that I have met a woman in my life with at least one of those name except Maserati.. thats new lol. My babysitter growing up was named Peaches.
I think Ghetto name is the wrong title. There are a lot of bad names.

Agreed. Listing "stripper names" is a bit off-topic and it doesnt carry the same weight as the issue of discrimination based on names that are considered ghetto.
LMFAO. My cousins birth name is Rufus Elrod Triggs. Everyone calls him Triggs.
That being said I met a Jezebel and a Cinderella. Cinderella did become a high paid escort.
But this a black issue because bad names for whites are considered cutsey and funny or clever. When its a black associated name like Malik or Jamal, its associated with poverty or crime not so cutesy.
I really have to disagree on this.
I don't find bad white names cutesy. They are just as embarrassing/poor choice for them as for anyone. If I'm in an HR position I'm going to put Rufus Elrod Spudknocker in the same pile as Malik Jamal Smith if they have the exact same qualifications. I've been surprised more than once assuming a person's race or ethnicity by their name or the way they sound on the phone, only to discover my assumptions to be totally wrong.
And I don't associate Malik or Jamal with poverty or crime, at all. So maybe it's where you grew up and who you were exposed to (Rufus, et al).
Sorry, but they all sound like Penthouse centerfolds and/or strippers.

Scratching my head over that one. Never heard of someone naming their child after mustard. Are there siblings Catsup, Mayo, Relish?
